Staff from Ascenti share their thoughts on a memorable season with Football Aid.
Throughout the season (18/19), a team of physiotherapists from Ascenti (a leading independent provider of physiotherapy and associated services) have been on hand to provide expert medical advice and treatments to participants involved at matches across the UK.
As part of the relationship with Ascenti, the physiotherapists were able to gain an insight into the events and football industry, as well as obtaining some valuable practical experience to support their careers.
Nick Worth (National Lead Clinician at Ascenti) has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry from his time working for Bolton Wanderers FC, and West Bromwich Albion FC.
After the events, we caught up with Nick (Worth) to capture his thoughts on the events, and his top tips for staying on top of your game:
“It has been a privilege for Ascenti to be able to support Football Aid this season. The physios who have covered the games have really enjoyed the experience. We have witnessed some great goals – some excellent saves, and some very entertaining moments on the pitch.
My tip for players looking to participate in Football Aid matches next season is start planning early! Maintaining some level of fitness over the season makes it easier to make it through a whole 90 minutes! I would advise regular stretching to help prepare your legs for the rigours of playing on a professional football pitch – it’s much bigger than it looks from the stand or on the television, and most Football Aid players have a greater respect for the professional footballers after playing at the stadiums.
Diet and hydration is always key. One sports drink and a poor diet throughout the year isn't enough to make it through a Football Aid match. Eat well and make sure you are supplying your body with the correct nutrients.
Above all, we look forward to helping out Football Aid again in the future”.
Sam Hunt (Band B3 Physiotherapist at Ascenti) has been actively involved with Football Aid for a number of years, and he also spoke to us about his experiences after the events:
“I have worked with Football Aid for a few years now in the West Midlands area covering Wolverhampton Wanderers (FC), Birmingham City (FC) and Leicester City (FC). I have always found all staff and players involved to be very friendly and the games are played in good spirit. I look forward to it every year and hope to continue being involved in the future.
For players I would advise them not to underestimate the challenge of these games, while it's for charity, keeping yourselves healthy and fit prior to taking part is important to enjoy the matches as much as possible.”
Lastly, Richard Milne (Events Manager at Football Aid) said:
“We were delighted to continue our proud relationship with Ascenti for season 18/19, and we are extremely grateful to Nick (Worth), Sam (Hunt) and the team at Ascenti for their professionalism, practical advice and contributions on the day. We look forward to continuing this relationship, and working with Nick (Worth), Sam (Hunt) and Ascenti again in the near future”.
