Southampton 2018

Our Southampton 2018 game was played in glorious sunshine at St Mary’s and the game certainly matched the weather, with a bright encounter, featuring some fantastic goals, going the way of the Saints Home team 4-2.

Date: Friday 18th May 2018
Venue: St Mary’s Stadium
Southampton (Home) vs Southampton (Away)
Kick Off: 10:30 am
Match Officials: Stuart Kenworthy, Stuart Wood & Ross Murphy

It was a lovely sunny Friday morning as the two teams lined up at St Mary’s. The Home team sporting the famous Red and White colours of the Saints took on an Away team in green and black.

The Home team started the faster with Michael Powell latching onto a delightful ball over the top only to be thwarted by a magnificent early save from Brandon Butt in the Away net; all this while the Away team were down to ten men with Adrian Sharpe off receiving early treatment.

It was the away side who opened the scoring on the quarter hour mark as excellent vision from Jack Sharpe made him take aim from over 30 yards out to find the back of the net. It was an excellent long range finish to put the away side one up. (0-1)

A corner for the Away team caused trouble in the box before Franceso Turi’s effort curled on to the head of CF Ben Tritta who could only rattle the crossbar from close range. The linesman was to raise his flag however. At the opposite end, Away captain Butt was in action to deny Allessandro Dell’Orto from close range.

Kevin Robertson had a chance to equalise as he slid in to connect to a delightful pass, but Butt was again unbeatable. The Home team had their equaliser on 42 minutes though as Alessandro Dell’Orto latched on to a ball cut inside and via a hefty deflection off of goalkeeper Butt, the ball found its way into the bottom corner. (1-1)

The Away team looked for an immediate response with Captain and GK Matthew Holt forced into a low save. The impressive keeper then denied Andrew Harland with a strong save as the RM turned and volleyed towards the net.

At the opposite end, brilliant control from Alessandro Menghi created an opportunity for the right midfielder before his volleyed effort could only find the red seats behind the goal. The some fantastic skill from Football Aid stalwart Baljinder Singh set up a chance for Michael Powell; his effort wide of the mark for a rejuvenated Home side.

The teams were to head into the break equal at 1-1, a rather low scoring half in Football Aid terms!

Half-Time: Southampton (Home) 1 - 1 Southampton (Away)

An early attempt for substitute Jamie Jordan failed to trouble the Home goalkeeper as both sides looked for an early 2nd half advantage.

However the side in Green weren't to be denied for long and a wonderful free kick from Centre Half Michael Lee expertly found the top corner to give the Away side the lead for the 2nd time. (1-2)

Emanuele Tamburrini was unable to connect with an inviting cross and watched his header go wide as the Home team looked for a swift response. Tamburrini then had a golden chance to put the Home side level but his effort rebounded out, off the upright.

A superbly timed sliding tackle from Kevin Banks denied an opportunity for the Away side to extend their lead before Away GK Butt was in action at the opposite end. The lively Dell’Orto denied by the stopper.

An equaliser soon followed however, when Tamburrini finally had his name on the scoresheet. A stunning long range shot took the keeper out of the equation and nestled in the far corner. (2-2)

The turnaround was complete when Alessandro Menghi fired home with 11 mins remaining after a pinpoint assist from substitute Wayne Batsford. A pass across the box found Menghi who fired low past a stationary Away defence. (3-2)

The tempo changed later on in the game with the Away side starting to tire. Dell’Orto had the ball in the net only to be denied by the offside flag. The Away side were losing their cool with challenges flying in as the Home side gripped control of the tie.

Michael Powell was the latest to be denied by the Away defence when his shot was blocked, before Tamburrini put it on a plate for Dell’Orto. Only to see the striker kick fresh air and the ball roll out.

It was to be a game of goal of the season contenders, as on the 89th minute, Alessandro Ricci added his name to the score sheet in style. A fine strike from the edge of the box found the top corner and not so impressive celebrations followed! (4-2)

The final whistle blew on the South Coast to the applause of the proud supporters and it was the Home team’s victory after an impressive comeback.
