A wet night was in-store for our players on the evening of Tuesday 10th May with the rain falling steadily at Bolton Wanderers’ Macron Stadium. However the Trotters players didn’t let the weather affect their performance and they put on a high-scoring show for the spectators with the Away team winning 4-7 in a close game.
Date: Tuesday 10th May 2016
Venue: Macron Stadium
Bolton Wanderers (Home) vs Bolton Wanderers (Away)
Kick Off: 18:00 pm
Legends: Tony Kelly, David Lee, John McGinlay
Match Officials: Neil Matthews, Adie Feber, William Broadbent & Chris Sharples
Despite the damp conditions the game started brightly, with both teams trying to get the first goal of the game, in what prove to be an action packed first half.
The first goal of the game came in the 25th min and it went to the Away team. No 11 James Kelly scoring with a lovely chip to put the team in front (0-1).
The Away team started to dominate possession in the 1st half with legend John McGinlay urging his team to push forward and get another goal and they did just that in the 31st min. Away No 8 Francisco Centeno scoring with a sublime well placed shot from outside the box to double his side’s lead (0-2).
The goals kept coming for the Away team and in the 41st min No 7 Leighton Wright coolly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper from the penalty spot to make it (0-3).
There was just time before the referee blew for half-time for the Away team to score their 4th goal of the night, the goal coming when South American ace Alejandro Morello expertly rounded the goalkeeper and put the ball in the back of the net on 45 mins (0-4).
Half-time and a solid team performance from the Away team with some moments of individual brilliance, however the Home team were not out the game yet.
Half Time: Bolton (Home) 0 - 4 Bolton (Away)
As soon as the 2nd half kicked off you could tell both teams were not ready to take the foot of the gas just yet and it was the Away side who got the first goal of the 2nd period and their 5th of the night. Rich Duffy beautifully lobbing the goalkeeper to increase his side’s advantage in the 60th min (0-5).
The Home side were finding themselves attacking a lot more in the 2nd half and legends Tony Kelly and David Lee must have rallied the troops in the dressing room at half time as they got their first goal in the 65th min when Home No 11 Josh Hawkes scored a screamer from outside the box (1-5).
The Home team didn’t stop there and 2 mins later in the 67th min Bolton and Home team legend David Lee showed his class with a mazy run through the Away team defence before putting the ball past the keeper to make the score (2-5). Was an unlikely comeback on the cards?
Away No 9 Rich Duffy was having none of it and he made a major dent in the Home team’s comeback hopes when he bagged his brace with a great header in the 69th min, restoring the Away team’s four goal lead (2-6).
But yet again Home Legend David Lee pulled his team back into the game almost immediately with another goal to bring the home side back with a fighting chance of salvaging something from the contest (3-6).
Both sides were fighting desperately to gain the upper hand and there was some great attacking play all over the pitch from both sides. Coming into the final 10 mins the game was still up for grabs and the Home team gave themselves a chance to salvage something when they grabbed another goal, No 17 Adam Varey with a fine solo effort leaving a nervy end to the game for the Away team (4-6).
However despite all their excellent efforts it wasn’t meant to be for the Home team, Away No 9 Rich Duffy sealed the win for the Away side in the 86th min after weaving through the Home defence and securing an impressive match winning hat-trick (4-7).
The final whistle blew on a fantastic evening at the Macron stadium where the Away side ran out 4-7 winners, though the Home side must be given great credit for their excellent 2nd half comeback and they certainly made it a nervous half for the Away team in what was a really tight contest.
Huge thanks to all the players and spectators for making the evening a brilliant success and thank you to Bolton Wanderers FC for the use of the Macron Stadium, to the fantastic legends Tony Kelly, David Lee and John McGinlay for being involved and demonstrating their long running support of Football Aid.
