The Home team won the toss and elected to allow the Away side to kick us off at Celtic Park.

The first chance was for the Home side as No 7 Bobby Anderson broke down the right hand side and put in a dangerous cross, however Away No 1 Pavol Holeczy was quick to meet the ball and tip it away.

The Away team soon had their 1st chance though, Away No 8 Michael Clarke broke into the box and found Away No 10 Jonathan Heaney, whose smart drop of the shoulder lost his defender, but he then saw his shot land into the safe hands of Home No 1 Paul Quinn.

The Away side continued to press and they deservedly took the lead in the 14th min. A fantastic run by Away No 11 Mark Henderson was finished off in style when his low right foot shot hit the back of the net (0-1).

Looking to make it 0-2, some nice team play by the Away team around the box saw Away No 5 Ivan Matlak try score with a low drive, but his shot was well held by Home keeper Pat Quinn.

Home No 10 & Captain Scott McQueen was certainly leading by example and he produced a superb sliding challenge to deny the Away team from scoring a 2nd!

A dangerous counter attack saw Away No 11 Mark Henderson run from the halfway line deep into the Home Team box but the energetic midfielder couldn’t find anyone with his cross into the area.

All their attacking pressure paid off though and the Away side doubled their lead in the 39th min. Away No 8 Michael Clarke provided a cool finish after Away Legend Joe Miller’s darting run into the box (0-2).

The Home team fought hard to get something from the half, however it wasn’t to be and the referee blew for half time and both teams headed back into the dressing rooms for a well-deserved rest. A very tight game saw the Away side edging it 0-2.

Half Time: Celtic (Home) 0 - 2 Celtic (Away)

Wearing the famous green and white hoops, the Home side restarted the 2nd half knowing what they needed to do.

The Home side came close, very close in fact; when they rattled the crossbar from Home No 14 Peter McGinley’s long-range strike and a brave defensive header in the wall denied Home No 10 Scott McQueen from testing the goalkeeper from a close range free kick.

The Home side’s good start to the half was giving them renewed confidence and they soon got their breakthrough. Home No 6 Colin Malcolmson, pouncing on a mistake before beautifully curling a shot into the top right-hand corner in the 55th min (1-2).

The Home side looked much more comfortable in the 2nd half but they found themselves further behind in the 66th min when Away No 7 Patrik Benian’s long-range effort found the back of the net with the help of the underside of the crossbar (1-3).

Then a quick counter attack saw Away No 9 Lubos Ondrus break free of the offside trap and smashed the ball home from 20 yards out. 20 mins left on the clock, will the Home team find a way back? (1-4)

A great low save from Away No 1 Pavol Holeczy stopped a Home attacker who found himself one-on-one but the attacker’s right-footed effort wasn’t enough to beat the alert keeper.

The last chance for the Home side to score a consolation goal fell to Home No 10 Scott McQueen, who drew a smart punched save from Away No 1 Pavol Holeczy.

And that was the final action of the game, despite controlling large parts of the 2nd half the Home side couldn’t achieve the result they wanted and the game finished in a hard fought 1-4 win for the Away side! Thank you to all the players and spectators involved in the 2016 Celtic game 1, also big thank you to Joe Miller and Danny McGrain for joining us and sharing their expertise and enormous playing experience.
