Brentford 2017

The Brentford players in our 1st ever game at Griffin Park were met with grey evening skies when they came out the tunnel on Thu 25th May. However whilst the weather may have disappointed, the game certainly didn’t and a thrilling contest saw the Home side go on to win 6-4, however the Bees were challenged every step of the way by a resilient Away side.

Date: Tuesday 16th May 2017
Venue: Griffin Park
Brentford (Home) vs Brentford (Away)
Kick Off: 19:45 pm
Legends & Managers: Marcus Gayle
Match Officials: Bryan Elstead, Spencer Brewer, Steven Conway & Steve Daly

Both teams started confidently, utilising the excellent playing surface to move the ball quickly, and it was the Home side that scored the first goal of the game after just 6 mins, and what a thunderous strike it was too from Nick Medcraft! The pacy No 7 scoring with a fantastic strike after he was played in by a clever through ball by Martyn Barnett (1-0).

The Away side looked to get themselves a quick equalizing goal and were turning up the pressure on the Home side’s defence, but to no avail.

The Home side continued their excellent start and got their 2nd goal on 13 mins, after Nick Medcraft controlled an over-the-top pass from Alex Cavell, and fired hard and low under the keeper (2-0).

Not to be deterred the Away side looked dangerous on the attack, and after a good run from Mark Beare created space for his side, Jason Guy’s well struck effort was well blocked.

The Home side showed their defensive solidity again soon afterwards, James Smith found himself alone running on goal, only to be halted by Jack Feehan, who caught up well to the striker to deny him the chance of a shot on goal.

Then a clearance from the Home side’s David Preston nearly started another attack, but the Away keeper, Aidan Peaty was quick to assess the danger and cleared the ball away.

The Home side’s keeper, Sam Godsall, was then called into action, when James Smith’s quick strike required the keeper to make himself big and block the shot.

Chances were coming at both ends but it was the Home side who increased their lead on 33 mins, and it was that man Nick Medcraft on the scoresheet again! The winger bagging his hat trick after he latched onto an up-field pass from keeper Sam Godsall, knocked it past Peaty and tapped the ball into the empty net (3-0).

A fantastic save from Sam Godsall was then needed to keep his first half clean sheet, and deny a powerful strike from Darren Hunt.

And soon after there was another great stop from keeper Sam Godsall, whose quick reactions and outstretched hand denied Terry Rickeard a 1-on-1 chance to score.

The Home side were back on the scoresheet just before half time when a fantastic, weaving solo run from the skipper Martyn Barnett helped set himself up for a composed finish (4-0).

The half ended with the Home side leading 4-0, after showing some clinical finishing, however, the Away side showed plenty of fight and created chances of their own, certainly enough for the second half to be an interesting battle.

Half Time: Brentford (Home) 4 - 0 Brentford (Away)

The Away side started the second half brightly, and they got their 1st goal after some excellent passing play between the midfield allowed Terry Rickeard to slot in Darren Hunt and the No 7 made no mistake, coolly placing the ball past the keeper on the 54th min (4-1)

The Away side were buoyed by their 1st goal and moments later it was a quick double from the team in Black! James Smith put Mark Beare 1-on-1 with the keeper, and the classy midfielder made no mistake, dispatching the ball confidently with 56 mins on the clock (4-2).

The comeback looked to be well and truly on now and after Mark Beare put his free kick into a dangerous area, his cross was met perfectly by David Preston who nodded the ball into the net (4-3). With 63 mins gone the Away side were dreaming of an incredible comeback victory!

The Home side responded well though and started pressing high up the pitch, and this tactical switch saw centre half Steven Foreman hit a powerful shot which was palmed away well by keeper Aidan Peaty.

Even though all the momentum was with the Away side, it was the Home side that snatched a goal on 73 mins. After Alex Cavell’s shot was blocked, the ball fell to Roberto Donay, and the ever alert striker reacted quickest to turn the ball into the net (5-3).

That strike looked like being a hammer blow for the Away side’s chances and Nick Medcraft’s 4th goal of the game just 2 mins later looked to have sealed the win for the Home side. The skilful midfielder showing great composure to knock the ball past the keeper and rolled the ball into an empty net to cap a fine MOTM performance (6-3).

The Away side weren’t done scoring yet though and on 82 mins Mark Beare netted his second of the game, with a stunning free kick from 25 yards out that crashed off the underside of the bar and into the net (6-4).

And it was nearly a fifth goal for the Away side after Jordan Martin’s curled effort looked to be heading goal ward, however the dangerous ball was headed behind by Mark Feehan.

The unrelenting pressure from the Away side was being met by solid and organised defending from the Home side as the end of the game approached.

At the other end a great strike from Nick Medcraft needed to be blocked by David Preston, who was in the right place to allow Aidan Peaty to catch the rebound.

Not to be outdone the Away side then had a fantastic chance to reduce the deficit, when James Smith found himself with just the keeper to beat, but the striker was denied by Sam Godsall who got down smartly and stopped the ball with an outstretched leg.

That was the final action of what had been an incredible end to end game, with the Home side doing enough to earn a 6-4 victory. The Home side scored some great goals in a thrilling game, and the Away side should be proud of the great fighting spirit they showed, at one point they even looked on for a remarkable comeback, but the Home team responded well and came away deserved victors.

A massive thanks to Brentford FC for allowing Football Aid to host our 1st ever game at Griffin Park and also to Bees Legend Marcus Gayle for sharing his invaluable support and expertise with the players.
