A 5 minute radio broadcast paved the way for the BBC’s first Appeal for children on Christmas day 1927, and less than 30 years later the first of many annual Appeals was televised, with 'Children's Hour Christmas Appeal' presented by Sooty and Harry Corbett raising over £625,000. The first ever BBC Children in Need telethon began in 1980 and saw a considerable rise in public donations (breaking the £1million mark!) This initiated further fundraising including auctions on Terry Wogan’s Radio 2 show, mass public fundraising, Pudsey Bear merchandise and the introduction of celebrity singles.
Since 1980, the annual telethon has raised over £500million which has gone towards making a positive change to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.
The BBC Children in Need Appeal night will be taking place this year on Friday 20 November 2009 on BBC One from 7pm.
