Sheffield United 2008

Fresh from sampling the atmosphere of the Bramall Lane dressing rooms and less than two weeks after the club had finished their Championship season; twenty-four players stepped out onto the pitch, where so many of their heroes had played before, to live their dream. .

Saturday 17th May 2008
Sheffield United Home vs Sheffield United Away
Bramall Lane
Match Officials: Phil Booker, John Abbey and Nick Mason

The authenticity of the game was evident from the outset with both sides playing some neat one touch football. However, it was the home side who where to threaten first. Midfielder Richard Hartley put in a dangerous cross which was just missed by the incoming Duncan Allott.

Away goalkeeper Steve Exley was then called into action saving superbly from a Jonathan Bennett header. Thus, it was slightly against the run of play when Away captain Adrian Landers broke the deadlock with a low right footed shot from 25 yards to take the lead after good play from Phil Morfitt. The midfielder celebrated this spectacular effort by jumping over the advertising hoardings.

The home team tried quickly to respond with pressure resulting in a corner which was eventually scrambled away by the away side. However, the away team continued to give as good as they got with striker Paul Chin’s movement especially impressive. It was further good play from Chin and goal scorer Landers that set up a golden opportunity for secdon striker Phil Morfitt. Unfortunately he could not find the target with the goal gaping.
However, somewhat against the run of play the away side found their equaliser. And it was captain Julian Taylor who struck with a left footed shot from outside the box to make the score one a piece.

It was not long before the away side restored the natural order. Chin broke through and while home goalkeeper Daniels managed to parry the shot, again it was Landers who was there to follow up from his attacking midfield role for the second goal.

It was at this time that home midfielder Richard Hartley came to the fore. First his jinking run saw a goal bound shot from away striker Paul Chin blocked. Then a great ball nearly picked out Duncan Allot bearing in on goal.

Half Time Home Team 1 Away Team 2

After a tight start to the second half it became clear that the home team now had an impressive left midfielder in substitute Ricky Wilson. After good work from the number 17, James Munson went close with a curling shot that brought a great save out of goalkeeper Exley. After another great cross from home 17 it was Mark Mitchell’s turn to just miss the target. There followed a double opportunity for James Munson firstly he ended a flowing move with a shot that brought a great save from away goalkeeper Exley then he side footed past the post.

Ploughing an increasingly lone furrow up front for the away team was the lively Chin who managed to win a free kick on the edge of the home box. After a superb delivery by David Marsh, Paul Anastasi was a whisker away from getting on the end of the ball.

Then followed a great opportunity for the home side; the keeper could only parry a shot into the path of Mark Mitchell who then saw his effort hit the post and agonisingly roll back into the keeper’s arms.

Then the home team finally got a deserved equaliser after winning a penalty courtesy of a clear handball from away full-back David Marsh. After some gamesmanship from Marsh, striker Mark Mitchell stepped up but saw his penalty saved however he followed up himself and made it two all in dramatic fashion.

This late equaliser took the game to penalties.
