Rangers 2008

With an incredible season which saw no less than thirty games played at Ibrox, twenty-seven enthusiastic Gers fans set out to play on a pitch which had hosted a host of great footballers in less than eight months. Not only were the proud fans standing where home heroes Barry Fergsuon and Allan McGregor had done this season, but also where Lionel Messi, Liédson and Diego had showcased their skills in front of the Ibrox faithful.

Monday 7th April 2008
Rangers Home vs Rangers Away
KO: 18:30 pm
Match Officials: Mark McLean, Sandy Miller and David White
Legends: Bobby Russell, Sandy Jardine and Ally Dawson

There were a number of chances in a lively affair at Ibrox, with the home side recording an emphatic 5-1 victory in a game that could have gone either way in the early stages.

It proved to be a very tight start to the match, with the away side winning the competitive midfield battle and applying some early pressure. There were some positive signs for the home side from captain Alan Marco but the away side looked livelier with David Hamilton almost through on goal before home goalkeeper Allan Gillespie rushed out to clear the danger.

Alan Marco was in the midst of the action again a minute later when he opened the scoring with a well-struck free kick that sailed into the net over the head of away goalkeeper Brian Davidson. The goal caused the game to open up and some good interplay between Andrew Dickson and Derek Muir almost allowed the home side to double their advantage. Home captain Marco continued to be a nuisance to the away defence by finding space down the right hand side but could only hit the side netting after cleverly cutting inside.

The away side were not without chances, however, and they remained dangerous on the break. Striker Dave Buglass saw a looping shot deflected over the bar and forced a good save from Gillespie just minutes later. The away pressure paid off in the 21st minute and resulted in them finding an equaliser from Chris MacCormick, who drilled the ball low into the bottom right corner of the goal from 20 yards.

The home team appeared un-phased and were perhaps unlucky to go into half time with the score level. Andrew Dickson hit the post from a Robert Johnstone cross and Christopher Russell had a goal disallowed for offside after finishing well on the half volley.

Half Time: Rangers Home 1-1 Rangers Away

The home team started better in the second half and regained the lead after only 47 minutes. Johnstone provided the square pass along the edge of the area and Muir struck a thunderous shot past home keeper Davidson who remained rooted to the spot.

There were corners at either end of the pitch resulting in some half-chances but both defences stayed strong under pressure. Away striker John Kerr was denied a goal, first by a good defensive block and then by goalkeeper Gillespie. The away goalkeeper was then called upon to make a good save with his legs at the other end to keep the score at 2-1.

Either team could have earned the win but it was the home side that began to dominate and eventually killed off the game with three goals in five minutes. Robert Johnstone netted in the 74th minute, an own goal made it 4-1 a minute later and Scott Marshall completed the scoring with a delightful half volley to the back post after some good work by Marshall to make it 5-1.
