Football Aid Championships, Friday May 18th, Molineux
Wolverhampton Wanderers (Home) 5 – Wolverhampton Wanderers (Away) 2
A double from skipper Leister inspired Wolves Home to a comfortable win at Molineux in the Wolverhampton Wanderers leg of the Football Aid Championships.
After a cagey start by both teams, the game flared into life in the 9th minute. Leister forging the first clear cut chance of the match, culminating in the striker shooting wide.
His next attempt was on target but was expertly blocked by keeper Cooke. The ball went winging downfield where Walker’s attempt was safely held by Campbell.
The Home side - led by Robbie Dennison and Mark Burke - were certainly enjoying the better chances at this stage. Following some great work from midfielder Oliver, Leister had another opportunity but his shot lacked pace and was easily saved by Cooke.
The opening goal came on the 20 minute mark, Marlow pummelling in a cracker to give the Home side the advantage.
Confidence boosted, Dennison’s men continued to press, Marlow nearly netting a double following a sizzling strike that skimmed the bar.
The Away team - encouraged by ex-pros Purdie and Robinson - finally responded with an aggressive counter attack of their own – beautiful forward play ending in a fantastic through-ball to Morris. With little power behind his shot, Campbell made a solid save – but his hands weren’t so safe minutes later…
Away’s equaliser came from a slight blunder from Campbell during a corner – the distraught keeper letting the ball slide through his hands and into the net to make it one all.
Purdie’s squad then eased into the lead, thanks to a sweet strike from Blower, the forward latching onto a smooth through-ball and slotting the ball home to make it 1-2 going into the break.
Wolves Home came charging back into the game within minutes after the restart. Leister finally hitting the net with a confidently taken penalty which sent Cooke diving the wrong way.
Away came close to snatching the lead in the 55th minute. Maclure steering a shot at goal from 35yards but Campbell denied the midfielder by just managing to push it round the post for a corner.
From here though, the Away team’s chances began to run short and Wolves Home soon took commanding control of the match. They went ahead with a great goal from substitute Leslie Tonks and added to this shortly after when Marsh slipped through the defence and made it 4-2.
Leister sealed the deal with 12 minutes to go, a good interception from ex-pro Burke allowing the Home Captain to tap in an easy goal, capping off a thoroughly impressive performance all round and making the final score 5-2.
