Leicester City 2007

Football Aid Championships, Saturday May 12th, The Walkers Stadium

Leicester City Home 5 – Leicester City Away 8

Despite a battling comeback in the second half,Mauchlen’s men fell to an 8-5 defeat in this highly charged leg of the Football Aid Championships.

The Away side – led by Paul Ramsey in defence – dominated the first half, netting 3 goals to build an impressive half time lead.

Anastasi opened the scoring with the first of his two, a strong finish from just inside the box.

And itwasn’t long before Chin followed suit, latching onto a through ball and deftly rounding the keeper to pull the ball in from a tight angle.

The Home team did come close on 2 occasions - Vint’s effort in the 22nd minute curling just wide while Hitchcock was unlucky with his impressive long range half volley which skimmed the crossbar.

However, two minutes from half time, Fraser made it 3 nil, with rather surprising consequences. It was a great goal from just inside the box but his celebrations were less than desirable, earning himself a yellow card after stripping to his (very glitzy) y-fronts. Luckily the stunned crowd had half time to recover from the shock…

The Away teamed continued to bag the goals in the start of the second half, substitute Whitby netting their fourth, following a scuffle in the penalty box.

Chin got his double minutes later, taking advantage of a mix-up between keeper Miles and defender Marsh to sneak in Away’s fifth.

Home finally retaliated with a rousing comeback goal – substitute Richards taking the glory after tapping in from 6 yards. Skipper O’Gorman nabbed their second two minutes later, the ball skipping out of keeper Kavanagh’s reach to make it 2-5.

With the battle on, Away responded with yet another goal - Anastasi rising above the defence to head home a corner in the 75th minute.

Undaunted, the Home team rallied and with ten minutes to go, O’Gorman hit the back of the net again. But like a see saw, play swung in Away’s favour as substitute Landers confidently took on keeper Miles and scored from the edge of the area. MacKenzie followed suit in the 83rd minute, a powerful header from 10 yards to make it 3-8.

The Home team kept pressing until the final second, Danaher meeting a stunning cross from Douglas to make it 4-8 while on the stroke of full time, Douglas himself scored a beauty from close range to make it 5-8. Despite every attempt in extra time, the gap was too wide for Mauchlen’s men to overcome and the final score stood 5-8 to a tenacious Away side.
