Leeds United Game 2 2007

Football Aid Championships, Saturday 5th May, Elland Road

Leeds United (Home) 3 – Leeds United (Away) 3

The afternoon match at Elland Road was another fantastic battle that left the crowd on the edge of their seats. Thrills and spills abounded with midfielder Poole netting what looked to be a match winning hat-trick before Kalwant Sandhu rescued a draw with a ‘Goal of the Season’ contender in the final minutes of play.

The first half belonged firmly to a dominant Home side – led by Mike Whitlow – and it was Poole who was causing the most problems for the Away defence. The midfielder enjoying a great run down the centre of the pitch in the 12th minute before firing a shot straight at Avery. The keeper cradled the shot well allowing the Away team – with John McLelland in the left back – to hit back with a Gater effort which flew just wide of the post.

Poole’s first came in the 21st minute, a glorious goal that hit the top corner from 25 yards. Away retaliated with two long range efforts – Owen’s skimming the bar while Gater watched his attempt inching past the post.

But despite their best efforts, Home went further ahead in the 40th minute. This time Poole blasting his shot into the roof of the net to make it 2 nil.

On blazing form, Poole bagged his third in spectacular style. Two minutes before the break, attacking the goal from midfield and lifting a powerful, low strike past a rather shell shocked Avery.

But Goddard handed the Away side a vital lifeline on the stroke of half time, firing in a crucial goal to give the Away fans hope going into the second half.

This proved to be the turning point of the game as McLelland’s men came charging back into the game after the restart. Following a frantic goalmouth scramble, Fisher finally tucked the ball home to make it 3-2.

Confidence boosted, the Away team attacked hard and the chances flowed in. Gater again came close, pulling his strike just wide while Dane pulled off a tremendous save to deny Goddard his second.

Their perseverance paid off with Sandhu’s dramatic equaliser. His magnificent 25 yard strike bouncing off the keeper into the top corner to level the score line.

Dane then produced two excellent saves within minutes of each other to prevent Away from making an awe inspiring finish to their tremendous comeback - blocking Goddard’s powerful header as the striker rose above the defence to meet a Spencer cross and stopping Gater’s shot with his legs, following a dangerous run from the midfielder.

The final score, a nerve tingling 3 all.
