Coventry City 2007

Football Aid Championships, Saturday May 5th, Ricoh Arena

Coventry City Home 1 – Coventry City Away 4.

The sun shone for Football Aid’s first return to Coventry in 4 years and debut at the magnificent Ricoh Arena. City Away enjoying an emphatic victory over Tommy Hutchison’s Home side thanks to 2 goals and a timely assist from midfielder Jez Carpenter.

The Home side were first on the score sheet however, striker Cutts running clear of Away’s defence – led by ex-pro Cyrille Regis – and firing a powerful low shot into goal to hand his team an early lead.

This motivated Away into action, Maclure coming close shortly after with a great header that was unlucky not to make it to the back of the net.

He got his goal on the 20 minute mark following some great play from Kennedy. The two Football Aid regulars working well together with Kennedy setting up Maclure perfectly, allowing the forward to finish the move confidently past keeper Knight.

Solid teamwork was apparent in the side’s next goal. A nicely worked corner giving Carpenter the chance to score his first with a sizzling shot that whistled under Knight’s body.

The Away side continued to show their skill in the second half. Cracks in the Home’s defence beginning to be revealed as Away piled on the pressure and Carpenter netting his second after a hand ball on the line awarded the determined side a penalty.

Even with victory in sight, Regis’ men continued to press. The final five minutes of play seeing Lack leap above Home’s defence to head a perfectly weighted cross from Carpenter home and make the final score 1-4.
