Charlton Athletic 2008

Just over three weeks had passed since Charlton Athletic's emphatic win over Coventry City at The Valley. 1st team stars including Matt Holland and Jerome Thomas had proudly ran up the same tunnel that day, and four other players did what all the Football Aid players were so eager to do and get on the score sheet. The scene had been set, and a new batch of Charlton players were ready to experience their own personal glory at The Valley.

Charlton Home vs Charlton Away
The Valley

Match Officials: Gordon Manning, Peter Cruise, Andrew Vincent and Aaron Bowater
Legends: Theo Foley, Paul Williams, Eddie Youds, Brian Kinsey, Paul Mortimer and Mark Kinsella

It was the Home team that started the game powerfully; however they met their match in defender Daniel Town, who allowed for no mistakes on behalf of his team. A great start by Home side's Darren Fender allowed striker Chris Thompson to get into space to receive the ball, and take the first goal scoring opportunity. This in turn forced Away keeper Scott Silver to make his first save of the game, giving his team a lifeline in the first five minutes.

The Home team's immediate impact caused a stir amongst the Away team however there was not a lot they could do to prevent the imminent goal. Home captain Darren McCall sent over a trade mark pass to striker Chris Gough, whose shot into the back of the net from an acute angle startled many of those around him.

Only a few minutes had passed before the Home Team were to double their lead from the penalty spot. Having just lost a goal, the Away Team were in trouble as the ball reached the box again too easily, only for a handball by Away captain Gareth Lack to be penalised by referee Gordon Manning in the fifteenth minute. Hadley Silver converted the penalty into his own brother's net to make it 2-0.

Still struggling to take the play into their opponent's half, Scott Silver had to make an acrobatic catch to prevent Chris Gough, who had skipped clear of the defence in trying to score his second goal, and his team's third. Gough was not to be denied, and when the Away team assumed that the danger was over, the striker again popped up in the box and this time made no mistake to ensure the Home team went into half time with a commanding lead.

Half Time: Charlton Athletic Home 3-0 Charlton Athletic Away

It was the Away Team who started the 2nd half with all guns blazing, and a few chances fell to Matt Edwell to bring them back into the game. Half time substitute Andrea Senzolo followed suit, almost reaping a reward for the Away team with a 25-yard effort saved by Home keeper Paul Phillips. But it wasn't to be: the Home side once more proved their dominance with Gough breaking from the edge of the area for his hat-trick and the home side's fourth goal.

Persistence from the Away team allowed the ball to travel back up the park, only for the danger to be cleared right back Dom Joyce. The Away team finally got what they were looking for, with a low drive from the edge of the area by Mark Greenhead managing to find the back of Paul Phillip's net, putting his side on the score sheet.

Celebrations were not to last long, however, for moments later a goal by Chris Thompson restored the Home Team's 4 goal lead over their opponents. As if scoring their fifth goal wasn't enough, the striker was quick to get his name on the score sheet again, scoring an astonishing sixth goal with a diving header.

With only moments to go, the Away side managed to pull another back with a goal from captain Gareth Lack, and minutes later it looked as though defender David Mills would go on to score a third from six yards out, however the home keeper proved too strong defensively and what should have been a simple chance was not to be. A game that looked as though it could have been more one-sided had actually turned out to be a fantastically entertaining game in the end, and even included an argument conducted by Leigh Gough which included the referee, the opposing team, his own team and finally even the crowd getting to hear his strongly argued opinions!
