Man Utd 2008

Just over two weeks after club legends Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Carlos Tevez graced the hallowed turf of Old Trafford, 27 Reds fans lined up in the tunnel to experience their 90 minutes of stardom. This was a moment where the up-and-coming Champions League final was pushed aside, and the exclusive moment to play on the pitch had arrived...

Monday 19th May 2008
Manchester Utd Home vs Manchester Utd Away
Old Trafford
KO: 16.00 pm
Match Officials: Stuart Delmonte, Mark Mellor and Thomas Mellor
Legend: Wilf McGuiness

The game got off to a slightly slow start however it was the Home Team that created the first chance attack, shortly after the 15th minute. Their first real shot on target however came after 20 minutes, when Marcus Gross was through on goal, but under pressure from the Away defence he blasted the ball high over the bar.

The Away team made an immediate impact, and their return was a bit more noticeable. Less than ten minutes after the Home Team's initial threat, Dennis Johnson jinked through the Home defence, consisting of Jay Eaton and Brian Donne, and from the right hand edge of the penalty box shot home a beauty into the top corner of the net.

An attempt on goal by Home midfielder Paul Bossons a mere 2 minutes later almost cancelled the Away goal celebration, when the ball was deflected off of the top left hand corner of the net. Minutes later, the team in Red were straight back onto the attack, with Niki Watkinson favouring his left foot in the box to create a close equalizer for the Home Team.

With less than five minutes before the half time whistle, Marcus Gross used his pace down the right hand side of the pitch, and tried to bypass the Away goalkeeper Alex Wilson. His shot on goal did pass Wilson, however went wide to the left of the keeper's net.

It was the Home Team who created the last chance of the first half, with Trevor Melvin swinging the ball through to Niki Watkinson on the left hand side, only for the ball to be cleared by the Away defence, and allowing the first half to end with an Away Team win.

Manchester Utd Home 0-1 Manchester Utd Away

Both sides remained focused and in the opening minutes it was the Home Team who continued where they had left off, sparking a challenge from Away defender Jonathan Bass. Paul Bossons had yet another chance to equalize, however his kick was shot straight past the keeper, and unfortunately for the Home Team, again went wide.

The home side had enjoyed a lot of possession in and around the Away penalty area without really testing goalkeeper Wilson. Wilson was once put under pressure just after 53 minutes of play with a free kick taken by Marcus Gross, which made the keeper stretch along his line to craft a stunning save to keep his side a goal ahead.

The Away Team could not seem to gain possession, and a shot by Brian Donne, and an unlucky strike by half time substitute Paul Davies at the edge of the Away box just couldn't give the Home Team their anticipated goal.

The Home Team were quick to retaliate, with Paul Bossons' left footed attempt on goal with 59 minutes gone. With the Home Team pushing as many players forward as possible, Niki Wilkinson managed a great chance in from the left hand side, however the keeper made a confident save when a goal looked the likely outcome.

With 63 minutes gone, Marcus Gross, who had been a thorn in the side of the Away's defence throughout the game, won a challenge and shot the ball into the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Home Team, celebrations were cut short when the goal was deemed offside. Minutes later, a goal came from the unlikeliest of sources when Away Team defender Jonathan Bass knocked in an own goal past Alex Wilson to allow a certainly deserved Home Team goal.

With ten minutes to go, a corner was given to the Away Team. The ball was volleyed into the box, where it found Away defender Shane Teague, who headed it into the back of the net. A few minutes later, the Away Team made it 3-1, with Mark McDowell getting his name on the score sheet with a close range effort that Home keeper Kevin Reid was unable to save.

To their credit, the Home Team kept pushing forward and Marcus Gross was so close to getting a goal back when he was through on goal with a header. This unfortunately wasn't to be, and the referee's final whistle signaled a deserved victory for the Away Team. Football Aid Ball
