Everton Game 1 2007

Football Aid Championships, Everton FC, Game 1, Goodison Park

Everton Home 0 Everton Away 2

A determined performance from striker Andrews gave Everton Home the edge in this closely contented match at Goodison Park.

Despite a ropey period including 2 offside incidents – the first involving a hungry-for-goal Andrews and the second, his opposite number Kelly chasing a through ball – much of the first half was easy on the eye with both sides looking to play football whenever an opportunity arose.

Everton Home posted some early intentions when striker Andrews almost broke through in the 2nd minute only to be crowded out by a vigilant Wiseman. The ball was sent flying up-field and Home keeper Smyth had to closely watch the flight of the Away skipper’s stinging drive as the ball shot just wide of goal.

The deadlock was broken just after the 20 minute mark, Smyth failing to hold forward Kelly’s confident strike to hand the Away team the lead.

Andrews was unlucky not to equalise minutes later, missing a sitter which the Away team swiftly swept to striker Bradley.

The forward charged down the left wing, showing his class by beating his opponents with a nice back heel before cleverly feeding the ball in for teammate Olsen. The midfielder didn’t strike his shot cleanly though, but it still bobbled close enough to worry keeper Smyth.

Both sides started brightly in the second half. Substitute Heeler unleashed a superbly controlled free kick in the 1st minute which may have caught out a lesser keeper than Simon Smyth. While Exley had no problem controlling McMahon’s acrobatic effort minutes later following a corner for the Home team.

In the 53rd minute, sub Clarke found himself clear in the box but his shot lacked pace and fell straight into the hands of Exley much to the Away team’s relief. Andrews had another attempt at goal in the 69th minute and it was sheer determination from the stoic Away defense that blocked Woods’ thumping effort.

Home’s biggest obstacle was in fact proving to be an on form Exley who pulled off one magnificent save after another, blocking shots from every angle. Despite every effort on their behalf, Away sealed the deal in the dying minutes following a break from substitute Chambers. He skipped free from the Home defense and flicked a perfectly weighted ball flying towards goal. With keeper Smyth too far up field, the ball landed in an empty net to make the final score 0-2.
