Charlton Athletic 2005

Football Aid Championship, Monday 23rd May, The Valley, Kick Off 9.00am, att 25

Charlton Home 5 Charlton Home 3

An early start for all at the Charlton leg of the Championship with the players arriving at The Valley bleary eyed yet raring to go for their 9am kick off on Monday 23rd May.

The first half was a thriller with both sides attacking early on and enjoying many close chances. The final ten minutes of the half saw the Home side putting on the pressure, hungry for a goal.

The game took a dramatic turn in the 34th minute when striker Lee Amis sent a cracking strike into the goal. Within seconds, they were on the attack again. Goalie Matthew Ball failed to secure a save and watched in horror as the ball rolled into the back of the net. With the Away team’s defence in shatters, the Home team took full advantage. A volley from Lee Amis was undoubtably one of the goals of the season at The Valley and took the score to 3-0 in just 6 minutes.

All looked lost for the Home side but minutes before half time, no 2 David Preston rounded goalie Lee Nessling before confidently slipping the ball into the left hand side of the net. 1-3 at half time with everything to play for.

The second half continued to enthral the small yet enthusiastic crowd. The Away team fought hard to pull back the deficit yet despite goals from no 5 Luke Shiach and a second from David Preston, failed to stop the Home side’s command of the match. Substitute Richard Williams scored Home’s fourth goal with Lee Robinson enjoying his second goal to make the final score 5 – 3 to an ecstatic Home side.

Man of the Match went deservedly to double goal scorers Lee Robinson and David Preston.

Glenn Southam (no 5 Home) commented after the match, “I would just like to say a huge thank you to Football Aid and Charlton for one of the best Monday mornings I have ever had!! I had a brilliant morning and it was helped by the fact that we won! Definitely back next year!”
