Man Utd Game 2 2005

In front of a loud cheering crowd, Football Aid players lived their dream at a showery Old Trafford. Wilf McGuinness managed both teams enthusiastically in his own unique style and playing for each team on the day was fellow club legend Lee Martin. They both contributed to making a great day and an unforgettable experience for the players and their friends and families.

The game itself was a tight match with 2 well marshalled defences keeping the score down and making life difficult for both team's forward lines.

1st Half -

The match started off evenly with both sides finding it hard to break down the opposition’s defence. However the deadlock was broken by the Away team’s No 7 Adam Heath, who made it 1-0 with a good low foot shot after a great run in on the keeper. The Home team came back into the game and indeed the Home no 7 was very unlucky not to score twice.

2nd Half -

A combination of great goalkeeping and excellent defence was keeping the score at 1-0, until the Away No 9 David Blundell made it 2-0 with a good low half volley finish direct from a corner. The Away team increased their lead to 3-0 when David Blundell scored his 2nd with a great low shot in off the keeper's right hand post. The Home team finally got their reward with a goal by Home No 4 Lee Bryant who made it 3-1 with a slightly controversial penalty, he took full advantage with a very good finish low to the keeper's right to score. Even after the game the keeper claimed he had got the ball before bringing the player down.

This was to be the final goal-scoring action in the game and the final whistle blew to end the game with the final score 3-1 to the Away team.

Man of the Match -

These awards proved very difficult decisions for the ex-pros to make, special mentions went to both Goalkeeper's, the Away No 4 Mike Alleyne and both Dan and Adam Heath in the Away team. However the winners of the signed match balls were, Home - Mervyn Evans and Away - David Blundell

Quotes from the day were:

“I had a fantastic day, it was excellent and your organisation was superb. It was a dream come true. You could do a lot worse than use Lee Martin on every occasion, he was a true gentleman and a star. Many thanks to you all I hope that the rest of the games go well for you.”

“What a day. Live the dream! There I was with my two sons playing in front of the Stretford End, magic! I would never have dreamt that! Ryan had a great time as mascot. After the game he came back on to shake everyone's hand. The referee asks, "Do you want to be a footballer?" Ryan replies, "No I want to be a referee, I have a whistle!", the ref then puts his hand in his pocket, takes out his Yellow and Red cards and says "You'll be needing these then!" and gave Ryan his cards. He was so pleased. I would like to thank EVERYONE.
