Birmingham City 2005

BIRMINGHAM CITY 0 BIRMINGHAM CITY 1

After a much needed few days rest, the Football Aid team headed down south for the biggest weekend of the Championship so far. With 6 games organised over 4 days, the schedule was gruelling but as always fulfilling.

The weekend kicked off with the Birmingham City leg of the Championship and again, we were blessed with sunshine. Once all the over excited players had arrived, they were taken on a tour of the stadium before reaching the changing rooms to meet their captains and managers for the day. Joe Gallagher took on the demanding role of managing both teams while Club legends Kevin Francis (Home) and Ian Atkins (Away) acted as playing captains.

The match turned out to be the most closely contested of the season with the first half a fantastic battle that left the supporters gasping for breath. Both teams enjoyed numerous close chances yet failed to convert these to much-needed goals.

The second half kicked off at the same frantic pace with both sides desperate to break the deadlock. After some beautiful forward play, the Away side were rewarded for their perseverance when Alex Smith broke free from the pack and scored the only and match winning goal. After a nail biting, exhausting 90 minutes, the Away side celebrated their 1 – 0 win over the Home team.

Man of the match went to defensive dynamo and Captain of the Home team, Matthew Philips and the midfield magician, Jon Davies in the Away team.

As Birmingham City regular, Keith Scott commented after the match, “Fantastic day! The best of the three I have played in! Think this will be my last year so as to allow someone younger to enjoy the experience. For me, playing with Big Kevin and talking to one of my all time favourites, Joe Gallagher has been just amazing. Thanks for the memories both mine and for my lad, as due to my leg break, he never got to see me play when I was 'fit' but has at least seen me play at 'St Andrew's'. Thanks and keep up the good work. Football Aid!”
