Celtic Game 2 2005

Sunday 15th May, Parkhead, Kick off 16.30, att 175

CELTIC HOME 3 CELTIC AWAY 11

The combination of gorgeous weather, the excitement of Game 1 and Celtic’s decisive win over Hearts ensured Game 2 kicked off in high spirits. In true legend style, Danny McGrain was once again the playing captain for the Away team with Tosh McKinlay playing for the Home team. Joining Tosh was Tom Callaghan as Celebrity Manager for the day.

Game 2 proved every bit as intense as Game 1 with a relative fest of goals. By half time, Danny’s away side was leading 1-5 after a rip roaring hat trick from striker Joe Collins with midfielders Anthony McCormack (no 6) and Tony Hamilton (no 8) adding to the decisive lead. After 43 minutes, Gary Landa found the back of the net for the Home side giving them a much-needed boost just before half time.

The Home side came blazing into the second half with two goals by Robert Jones (no 10) and Mark Robinson (no 7) in the first ten minutes. However, the Away troops quickly rallied and let rip with the first of many spectacular goals. No 7 Niall Quinn was the first to score before Joe Collins fired in his fourth. Not content with leading 3-7, Damien Murray continued the onslaught with his fine goal in the 72nd minute. Substitute Kevin McInally followed with one of his own before Gary Kane slotted in a cheeky shot a minute from full time.

In the three minutes of extra time, the Away squad showed no mercy and Joe Collins proved himself Man of the Match with his fifth goal making the final score 3 – 11.

Preventing the Away team lengthening their lead with several dramatic saves and maintaining a cool head under constant pressure saw the Man of the Match going to goalie John Fadian for the Home team.

After the match, John commented, “What a fantastic day I had and one I won’t forget, a dream come true! We took a bit of a beating but the result was not the point. It’s the experience and honour to play for your heroes whilst raising money for worthwhile charities. A win-win situation! Keep up the good work, Football Aid!”
