Crystal Palace 2005

Football Aid Championship, Wednesday, 11th May, Selhurst Park, att 250

Crystal Palace 0 Crystal Palace 5

It was the most hotly anticipated match of the season and for all Crystal Palace fans a ‘dream’ result…

Wednesday the 11th May saw the Football Aid team in London for the ‘Crystal Palace’ leg of the Football Aid Championship. For 28 highly nervous Eagles fans, this was the day they had been waiting for all their lives – an officially regulated 90-minute match on the hallowed turf of Selhurst Park.

After rousing team talks and a quick warm up, the game kicked off at a furious pace with both sides attacking early. The deadlock was soon broken though as no 8 Dan Shoubridge broke free of the pack and sent a scorching strike past keeper Chris Jones giving the Crystal Palace Away troops an early lead. Celebrations were short lived though as the ever-vigilant referee, Gordon Manning, swiftly booked him for taking his shirt off.

Desperate to make amends, the Home team attacked hard but it was the Away team that took control and the goals flowed in. No 7 Danny Plows scored a nifty double with Tim Hatt and Jack Williams putting the final nails in the coffin and both scoring as the final seconds ticked away.

Man of the match deservedly went to Home no 2 Richard Hofen, marshal of the defence and Away team’s Alan Rawlings for an outstanding performance.

As Denis Bylett (no.6 Away) commented after the match, “ What a great evening! I have played here before but that was in the 1960 Croydon Junior Schools Cup Final - a long time ago! I thought the pitch was big then but it seems a lot bigger now! A brilliant but tiring experience! Thank you to all at Football Aid and Crystal Palace!”

Karl Morgan (no 5 Home) continued, “I thoroughly enjoyed tonight as did my family despite the result! Football Aid and Crystal Palace have made my dream come true. I can’t wait till next year!”

Football Aid would like to say a big thanks to Crystal Palace for opening their doors and helping us make so many dreams come true.
