Rangers 2005

Monday the 9th May saw the Football Aid team in Glasgow for the ‘Rangers’ leg of the Football Aid Championship. For 28 highly nervous Gers fans this was the day they have been waiting for all their lives– an officially regulated 90 minute match on the hallowed turf of Ibrox alongside Hall of Famers Mark Hateley and Sandy Jardine, ex- International Alan McLaren and the incomparable Bobby Russell.

After rousing team talks and a thorough warm up, the game kicked off at a furious pace with both sides attacking early. After 18 minutes, the deadlock was broken as David Wallace (Captain) sent a scorching strike into the top right hand corner of the goal giving the Rangers Home troops an early lead.

The Home team roared into a two goal lead just after half time with no 10 Stuart Kleinman slotting the ball past keeper, Derek Smith. Desperate to make amends, Mark Hateley’s Away team attacked hard and were awarded after 60 minutes as no 23 Frankie McGovern broke free of the pack, sliding the ball past the ever vigilant, Hugh Wardrope.

The second half was a fantastic battle with the frantic pace leaving the supporters gasping for breath. With the seconds ticking away, Robert Stalker secured victory for the Home team with a feisty finish off his left foot after calmly rounding the keeper.

Man of the match deservedly went to Home no 5 Alan Brown, marshal of the defence and Away team’s Derek Smith for an outstanding performance.

As Captain, David Wallace commented after the match, “I have now realised a lifetime ambition and it is almost impossible to describe in words how brilliant the experience was. Football Aid and Rangers FC made my dream come true and everything about the day made me feel truly part of the experience of being a Rangers player.”
