Sunderland 2005

Please Note: Due to unforeseen circumstances parts of the following match report are still tbc at this stage, if you played in this game and would like to help us confirm further details that would be much appreciated.

The sun was shining down on the 28 Football Aid players who entered the Stadium of Light, the day after Sunderland took delivery of the Championship trophy and players were excited as they all prepared to live their dream and play the match of their lives. Present on the day to give their wealth of knowledge and experience were Sunderland legends Mickey Horswill, Bobby Kerr, Gary Bennett and John Kay.

The game itself had all the elements that a great game should have, including a hat-trick from one of the players and an enthusiastic crowd of friends and family who cheered on their heroes from the stands.

Quotes from the day:

“Many thanks to the staff of Football Aid for the fabulous opportunity to fulfil a lifetime dream whilst raising money for a worthy cause. The day was unbelievable, from the personalised kit, playing with boyhood heroes to walking out in front of family and friends. Unbelievable!”

“Thanks I had a fantastic day I can now gracefully retire safe in the knowledge I scored with a bullet header in the top corner of the north stand goal. Apologies to all those watching for my over the top celebrations. Also, pass on my thanks to the guys on the day for their organization, encouragement and in making us all feel welcome.”

“The whole day was great. Best thing for me was scoring a goal, never thought I would even get close to getting one! The operation team are top class and helped you with any problem. Great event and one I would love to do again. Many thanks for one of the best days of my life! Hope to do it all again next year”
