West Brom 2005

Saturday 7th May, The Hawthorns, Kick off 15.00, att 220

From London, Football Aid headed up to Birmingham and then West Bromwich to continue the whirlwind Football Aid Championship. On arrival, Football Aid were delighted to see many of the first team players preparing for their journey up to Manchester for the big game against United. That excitement set the tone for the rest of the day as 28 enthusiastic West Brom fans arrived to fulfil their dreams of gracing the hallowed turf of the Hawthorns.

Legends Steve MacKenzie (Home) and Nicky Cross (Away) were the player/ managers for the day and entered into the spirit of things giving the teams’ vital team tactics and a warm up before the match.

It was soon apparent after kick off that the game was going to be a close run nerve tingler. Both sides were evenly balanced, enthusiastic and determined to win. The first half was a cracker with goals from Thomas Bergin (no 2) and Martin Fowmes (no 17) for the Home team with sub Mark Edkins (no 14) in the Away team valiantly narrowing the deficit, giving the Home team a hard fought 2 – 1 lead at half time.

The second half continued to enthral as Mark Edkins scored a blazing equaliser early on prompting the Home side into an aggressive counter attack. The score however remained two all until Thomas Bergin came on as sub. He then played out every footballer’s fantasy; saving the day and scoring the winning goal in the dying minutes. The winner was as dramatic as the game and hit the back of the net in the 88th minute. The final score was 3-2 to the Home team.

After such an exhilarating display, Man of the Match was a tough decision but rightly went to the double goal scorers, Thomas Bergin and Mark Edkins.

After the match, Thomas said, “Well were do I start, what a fantastic day all round! It’s been the best experience of my life. To go out onto the pitch of West Brom, well words cannot describe what it felt walking out with the full Albion kit (fantastic). I must say that Football Aid were great from start to finish, made you feel at home and they were just brilliant. My day was a dream come true scoring twice and getting man of the match from Steve Mackenzie and my teammates. That’s something I will treasure for the rest of my life. Thank you once again for a great day!

All at Football Aid wish to give a special thank you to Irvin Morris for his help on the day. His continuing support is most appreciated and we look forward to seeing him next year!
