QPR 2005

Thursday 5th May, Loftus Road, Kick off 18.00, att 130

Revitalised and refreshed after a day of rest from the eventful Spurs and West Ham games, the Football Aid team sped over to Shepherds Bush for the QPR stage of the Football Aid Championship on Thursday 5th May.

After a wet start, the sun broke through to set perfect conditions for the evening game. Behind the scenes, however, all was not well as unfortunately Away manager Joe Gallen had to pull out at the last minute due to injury. Happily, hero of the hour, Steve Quashie calmly stepped up, cancelled his evening plans and joined Gary Waddock (Home) as Celebrity Manager for the day. What a star!

The managers took their roles seriously and the 28 QPR fans were put through a thorough warm up before kicking off the game at a blistering pace.

It was a cracking game, evenly balanced with both sides enjoying many chances at goal. And the goals certainly flowed in. Steve Young (no 9) enjoyed scoring first for the Away team with further goals from his teammates, Simon Green and Gordon MacLeod.

Andrew Ward (no 9) scored a stunner for the Home side but it was Nicholas Astaire who was the star of the show and earned himself man of the match with his rip-roaring hat trick to secure victory for Gary Waddock’s Home side.

Steve Palmer (no 5) deservedly received man of the match for the Away side for his determined defence.

As John Cooney (no 8 Home) commented after the match,” I had a great time playing at Loftus Road; it was a lifetime ambition fulfilled. I only wish I had been a bit fitter, I would have enjoyed the experience even more, instead of desperately fighting for breath and consciousness! I even regained my ability to walk after two days! Your organizers were efficient and friendly; Gary Waddock was a good sport, and added to an all round fantastic experience for me. As an insulin dependant Diabetic myself I fully appreciate everything your organisation is doing. Keep up the good work!”
