Southampton 2005

Football Aid’s Southampton game ended with exhilarating penalties leaving the Away team as the winners, although all players felt like champions on the day at St Mary’s. Both teams played fantastic with Managers John Sydenham and Roy Beasley offering coaching words from the touchline while Saints’ legends Ian Juryeff and Francis Benali were busy leading both of the teams on the pitch.

The normal time score ended one a piece and those lucky to get their names on the score sheet were Right Midfielder Nicholas Enright for the Home team and Centre Forward Kevin Birkett for the Away team. Nail-biting penalties followed and were scored by:

No. 10 Captain Gerry Roberts, no. 15 Peter Morgan, no. 6 Jon Ellerbreck, no. 9 Andrew Mintram and no. 5 Rod Coleman.

No. 7 Nicholas Enright, no. 8 James Oldbury and no. 11 Chris Bulpitt

The Away team winning 6-4

Man of the Match

Home no. 9 Tim Tovell Away no. 4 Karl Woodrow

Home no. 4 Paul King, Away no. 10 Gerry Roberts

Because of every-ones contribution and enthusiasm, we succeeded in organising a great event and raised significant funds for charity. Every one had great day out including friends and family who sat in the stand, cheering the players on as they set out to live their dream and grace the turf at St Mary’s Stadium.

Best quotes from the day were:

“ As probably the oldest bloke on the pitch, it’s not surprising that I still ache in places that I didn’t know I had!! We had a fantastic day again. Many thanks to all in the Football Aid team. (Gerry Roberts).”

“The day itself was superb. Being able to score a goal, albeit a penalty, was amazing and will cherish my pictures and dvd for ever. I'm sure it will be showed over and over again in the pub! We couldn’t have been looked after any better as players. Thank you to you and the Football Aid team. (Chris Bulpitt)”

“The whole day was a fantastic experience, and worth every penny of the bid. I expect most people have already paid you the same compliment. My only regret is that I got to the bidding too late and therefore could only play for half a game. (Richard Hosey)”
