Hearts 2003

Kick Off 11am

It was a day of mixed weather, as 28 players arrived at Tynecastle, nervously clutching their kit bags. Despite being nervous, these players were all very excited as they were about to take part in the final game of the Football Aid season.

Walking into the changing rooms the players found their personalised shirts hanging up, and were greeted by their managers and captains for the day. In the home team dressing room, Walter Borthwick was the Manager and Allan McClaren was the Captain. In the away dressing room, Gary Mackay was the Manager and Scott Crabbe was the Captain.

After a team talk from the managers and captains, the two teams lined up and were led out onto the “hallowed” turf of Tynecastle. They were greeted by a very supportive crowd, who, despite the occasional downpour, remained vocal throughout the game.

The game started well with goals being scored on both sides. It was a closely-fought battle, that saw the away team take the upper hand, with a great hat-trick from Steven Gilroy and two goals from Ross Donald. Stephen McDowell scored two goals for the home team.

The game finished 8-4 to the away team, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all, especially the players, who were delighted to have the chance to play alongside Hearts greats such as Allan McClaren and Scott Crabbe, and being managed by Walter Borthwick and Gary Mackay.

Stephen McDowell, number 6 for the home team, was presented the man of the match title, for his great goal scoring. David Brown on the away team won man of the match for his team for some really great defending.
