Coventry City 2003

Written by David Dolby

2pm Kick-Off

The Coventry City fans that took part in the Football Aid game at the Highfield Road on Thursday 1 May were delighted to be playing in the alongside club hero David Busst. His presence was an extra delight to the players, judging by the number of photos that were taken and autographs that he was signing.

The game kicked off at a furious pace with both sets of players trying to impress their respective captains. The exchanges were fast and furious with the players looking to play football at every opportunity. Bryan Shields had to limp off after 10 mins after pulling his hamstring only to be replaced by his brother Ian Strain. It was the away team that took the lead through a 20 yd effort which nestled in the top corner, the second followed quickly when a flowing move that started from Dave Dolby and was finished off by Alan Dolby.

The second half was a real open affair with goals coming thick and fast, the away team produce another six goals (Goals from Mark Charnley scoring 2, one being assisted by his brother Dave) with the home team replying with 2.

The Man of the Match Awards were Home Team Steve Mason from Bristol and Simon Pitcher for the Away side who had assisted in 4 of the goals.

It was certainly a family event this year, as two sets of brothers and a mascot took the field together at Highfield Road. David and Allan Dolby and David and Mark Charnley all played on the away team, making it slightly more confusing for the home team. Mia Charnley was also the mascot for the away team on the day.
