Norwich City 2018

Our 2018 encounter at Carrow Road was played in glorious sunshine throughout and certainly provided plenty of bright moments for the watching fans to enjoy, with brilliant goals, great saves from the keepers and lots more entertainment besides! The Home team came out on top 3-1 in the end, but the two teams were neck and neck throughout the 90mins and all the players went home felling rightfully proud of their excellent efforts on the hallowed turf.

Date: Friday 11th May 2018
Venue: Carrow Road
Norwich City (Home) vs Norwich City (Away)
Kick Off: 10:00 am
Playing Legends: Adrian Forbes & Mike Milligan
Match Officials: Peter Venables, Lewis Venables, Harvey Newstead & Tony Collins

As we’ve come to expect now, the sun was out and the Carrow Road pitch was in great condition as our Canary fans took to the pitch for our 18th annual Norwich City game. Lining up alongside the players were Legends Adrian Forbes and Mike Milligan and they had certainly drilled their teams well, with both sides starting the game looking very well organised.

The Home side were passing the ball accurately, with Dean Hurren controlling much of the play in the centre of the park, but it was the Away side, wearing the Black and Grey change kit, that fashioned the 1st real opportunity after 15mins. Away Captain Gary Rutherford timed his run well to collect a flick on from his strike partner on the left side of the box and fired an effort on goal, however Home keeper Breifne Earley did well to narrow the angle and palm the ball away for a corner.

Shortly afterwards Away No 7 Ricky Johnson came with an effort from a tight angle, however his low shot just evaded the far post. The Away team were starting to get on top now and their No 9 John Day almost broke the deadlock with a fine left foot shot, however Earley got down well to push the ball away to safety.

The Irish stopper was in great form and he had to be alert again a few minutes later when John Day got his head to a clever through ball from fullback Jon Hare, the striker nodded the ball goalwards, however Earley did brilliantly to narrow the angle and block Day’s effort. The Away striker was proving to be a real threat and he almost opened the scoring with a great turn and poked effort with the outside of his foot, but Earley was in the perfect spot again to tip the ball over the bar!

However despite the Away team’s pressure it was the Home team that took the lead on 44mins! Right back Paul Whitlock started the move with a ball up the side-line to Liam Bailey, the No 8 played it to Andrew Preston, who floated a ball over the top of the defence to No 10 Steven Foreman and the big striker did the rest, brilliantly controlling the ball and turning away from the defender in one movement and firing the ball low past the keeper into the left hand side of the goal (1-0).

The whistle went soon afterwards with the Away team still wondering how they were behind. However the margin was narrow and the Men in Black went into the break determined to turn the game around in the 2nd period.

Half-Time: Norwich (Home) 1 - 0 Norwich (Away)

The Away team came out after the break fully motivated after a rousing team-talk from Legend Mike Milligan, and their impressive centre half Simon Baillie tried his luck from distance early on, however his shot was just too high.

Back came the Home team and the lively looking substitute Sean Cook created an opportunity for Dean Hurren to get a shot on target, however his strike was well held by Away keeper Mark Yates. At the other end John Day tested the keeper with a well struck volley from the left side of the box, however Earley did well to hold onto his powerful effort.

Despite the hot conditions the game was still being played at a break neck pace and both teams were pushing for opportunities. However both defences were holding out well and clear-cut chances were at a premium. Away No 14 Robert Venis came close with an acrobatic volley inside the area, however his effort was just too high.

The game was on a knife edge and the next goal was likely to prove crucial, and it was the Home team who got their noses further in front with 78mins on the clock. The Away team couldn’t clear their lines on the edge of the box and Dean Hurren did well to win a header and nod the ball towards Steven Foreman and the No 10 did brilliantly to turn quickly and bag his brace with a brilliant volley from 15 yards out (2-0).

The Home team were full of confidence now and on 84mins they sealed the win with a brilliant team goal. The ball was played quickly between 3 or 4 players before being recycled to Adrian Forbes, the Canaries Legend played it into the feet of striker David Heason and the No 9 cleverly back-healed it into the path of Sean Cook and the skilful midfielder slammed the ball low into the net past the Away keeper Mark Yates (3-0).

The Away team could count themselves as unlucky to be 3 goals behind and they got a deserved consolation for all their efforts with under a minute of the game to go! John Day looked up and saw Daniel Green making a lung bursting run into the box and found him with a perfect ball over the top of the defence and Green made no mistake with his finish, sliding the ball past Earley into the left side of the net (3-1).

However it was too late for the Away team to mount a serious comeback and the referee blew for full-time a few moments later, with the Home team coming out on top 3-1 in the end. It had been a hugely enjoyable game played in great spirit throughout and the players received a deserved round of applause as they left the field at the end of the game.

Huge thanks again to Norwich City FC, our Legends Adrian Forbes and Mike Milligan and all our Canaries players for their brilliant efforts on the day.
