The conditions were perfect as the Sporting Clube de Portugal players exited the tunnel and climbed the stairs onto the immaculate José Alvalade pitch. With 10 member of the Sporting CP Veterans team involved the standard of the game promised to be high and so it proved, with the watching fans enjoying a hugely entertaining 10 goal game. The Away team ended up 3-7 winners after racing into a 6 goal lead at half-time, but a fighting performance from the Home team ensured the game was much closer in the 2nd half and both sides left the field in great spirits at the end of the contest.

Date: Friday 26th May 2017

The Away team, playing in the White and Green ‘Stromp’ kits were quick off the mark and opened the scoring after just 10mins, and it was one of their English contingent Rich Bolter who showed great skill to finish off a flowing move with a clinical finish from 10 yards (0-1).

The Away team continued to attack at will and they doubled their lead within 3 mins of their opener, and it was that man Rich Bolter on the scoresheet again, with a stunning volley from close range (0-2).

Rich Bolter and Joey Hylands had come all the way from Chippenham for the game and their instinctive interplay was causing no end of problems for the Home defence and the pair combined again on 15 mins to increase the Away team’s lead further. This time Bolter turned provider and when his fantastic pass found Joey Hylands in space the No 7 made no mistake from 12 yards (0-3).

The Away team had certainly gelled quickly and on 18 mins they increase their lead further! That man Joey Hylands provided the finish again after great play from his team (0-4).

The Home team - wearing the famous Green and White Hoops - were shell shocked after the fast start from the Away team but they worked their way back into the game with some excellent passing movements in midfield and with 20 mins on the clock they got their reward with the ever clinical Fabrizio Galasso getting a goal back for the Home team with a great finish (1-4).

However the Away team were quick to get back on the attack and after some great play from Captain Hugo Casimiro played in Rich Bolter, the striker made no mistake to bring up his hat-trick after just 24 mins (1-5).

The Away team continued to press for more goals straight from the restart and within a minute they had their 6th goal of the game! This time it was their Captain Hugo Casimiro who got the goal, with a fine left foot strike from the No 10 flying past the Home keeper Daniel Lloyd and into the net (1-6).

The Away team’s former players were playing a big part in their success and the classy Ivo Silva capped a fine 1st half performance with a clever left foot finish after 32 mins to put his side in command as half-time approached.

The Home side weren’t giving up and they tried all they could to get a goal back before half-time, however the Away defence held strong and they maintained their 1-7 lead as the referee’s whistle blew for half-time, giving both sets of players a much needed opportunity for some refreshments. It was certainly going to be an important team talk for the Home team’s Manager and Captain.

Half Time: Sporting CP (Home) 1 - 7 Sporting CP (Away)

Whatever the Home team discussed at half-time it certainly worked and they started the 2nd half in much better form.

The Home defence was certainly looking solid, with Rich Duffy a rock in the centre of defence and goalkeeper Danny Lloyd looking an assured presence behind him.

The chances of a comeback were slim but on 55 mins the Home side at least gave themselves some hope with a great header at the back post from Italian striker Emanuele Fratini reducing the deficit (2-7).

With the temperature gradually increasing as midday approached the pace of the game understandably slowed down a bit and both teams struggled to create any major clear-cut opportunities in this period, however the standard of play was still excellent and the game was very watchable.

As the final whistle approached the Home attack upped their efforts and they got their reward on 86 mins with a stunning strike from Emanuele Fratini capping a fine performance from the No 11 (3-7).

Neither team could add to their goal tally and the 2nd half finished with the Away team ending up worthy winners by 3-7. It had certainly been the typical game of two halves, with the Away team racing into a 6 goal lead at half-time only for the Home team to fight back with 2 goals of their own and keep an impressive clean sheet in the 2nd half.

Our 3rd year of games with Sporting Clube de Portugal had got off to a great start and we’d like to say a massive thanks again to the club, the Sporting Foundation and all their former players for their fantastic support on the day.
