The Away team started the game in the glorious North East evening sunshine at the Riverside Stadium.
The 1st chance of the game fell to the Away side, No 8 Michael Dalton found No 9 Ross Adamson whose strike forced Home keeper Chad Pearson into an excellent flying one handed save.
From the resulting corner, Chad Pearson pulled off another fantastic save after Away No 5 Rich Duffy rose highest in the box to win a powerful header.
Both sides were pushing for the opener and the 1st goal of the game fell to the Home side in the 12th min. Home No 10 Michael Romney curled a shot into the net with the help of the goal post (1-0).
There was then a glorious chance for the Home team to double their lead, a skilful run into the box by Home No 9 Jamie Martin saw home find No 8 Sam Jones, whose 1st time shot was struck just over the bar after quick defending from the Away defence closed him down.
A bit of football pinball in the penalty area occurred before a fabulous acrobatic attempt from Home No 9 Jamie Martin saw his overhead kick go over the bar.
The Home team continued to press though and it was soon 2-0 in the 20th min. Home No 6 Boro Badger threaded a pin-point ball through to Home No 11 Matthew Botwright who collected the ball and rounded the keeper before slotting home (2-0).
Not to be denied the Away team found themselves back in the game in the 23rd min. A mazy run by the ever impressive Away No 6 Sam Cunningham saw him finish with a low drive into the back of the net (2-1).
An end-to-end game at the Riverside continued in the 25th min, another lovely assist from Home No 6 Boro Badger found Home No 9 Jamie Martin and the striker scored with a cool finish (3-1).
The game raged from end to end for the remainder of the half but neither team could add to their tally and the end of the 1st half arrived with the Home side maintaining their 2 goal lead. It had been a brilliant encounter so far with action all over the pitch from both teams, but it was the Home side that headed into the dressing rooms leading.
Half Time: Middlesbrough (Home) 3 - 1 Middlesbrough (Away)
The Home team restarted the 2nd half looking to hold on to their 1st half lead.
However, it was the Away team who struck 1st in the 2nd half, a brilliantly executed turn and 1st time finish from Away No 9 Ross Adamson in the 48th min bringing the score to (3-2).
The Home team responded well though and quickly restored their 2-goal lead when Home No 9 Jamie Martin scored his 2nd of the night with a low drive into the bottom right hand corner of the goal in the 50th min (4-2).
It was 5-2 to the Home side in the 54th min, as Home No 8 Sam Jones slotted home from a tight angle on the left hand side.
Middlesbrough Home No 11 Jamie Martin earned the coveted Goal of the Season trophy for a stunning effort from our 2015 game at The Riverside and he was showing his class again, this time breaking free of the defence in the 74th min and calmly slotting home for an impressive hat-trick (6-2).
The Away side kept pushing for goals, and a great piece of skill and cross by Away No 6 Sam Cunningham found striker Ross Adamson whose header made the Home No 1 Chad Pearson pull out a flexible one handed scoop to keep the ball out.
Home striker Matthew Botwright was also in great goal-scoring form and he bagged his 2nd of the night with a well taken finish to make it 7-up for the Home team (7-2).
Deadly striker Matthew Botwright then bagged a hat-trick when he sprinted into the box and rounded the goalkeeper before finishing calmly (8-2).
The Away side hadn’t given up yet though and with 88 mins on the clock Away No 7 Matthew Walker reacted quickest to a shot from Sam Cunningham and his cheeky flick snuck into the goal to reduce the deficit (8-3).
And that was it; a dominant Home team performance saw them win 8-3 on a fantastic evening at the Riverside Stadium. The Away team never gave up though and made it a tight contest for the Home side throughout.
Huge thanks again to all our Boro players and fans and also a special mention to Boro Legend Andy Campbell for his fantastic support on the night.
