Hearts 2016

It was a privilege to make our return to Tynecastle for our 2016 game, with both sets of Hearts fans excited to be gracing the hallowed turf again. The game itself was a thrilling affair, with the determined Home side battling all the way against an on-form Away side. In the end the Whites were just too strong for the Maroons, going on to win 2-5, but each and every one of the players could be hugely proud of their efforts and by the end of the day the Hearts fans all went home happy, having enjoyed the occasion immensely.

Date: Sunday 22nd May 2016
Venue: Tynecastle
Hearts (Home) vs Hearts (Away)
Kick Off: 11:00 am
Match Officials: John Headrick, Jack McClymont & Alex Griffin

As the sun shone brightly in the West side of Edinburgh, the Home team kicked the game off at Tynecastle, the famous home of Heart of Midlothian FC.

It didn’t take long for the 1st goal to come, the Home team taking the lead in the 3rd min when Home No 9 Ian Watson latched on to Home No 2 Greg Blaney’s excellent long ball to make it (1-0).

A very tight game was being played out with both sides playing some tense football, and the Away team soon brought the score level in the 16th min. An Away goal kick evaded the whole Home team and saw Away No 10 Charlie Legget collect the ball and make a clever run before finishing with a fantastic lob from outside the area (1-1).

It continued to be an even game between the two sides, with not much separating them. That was until the 25th min when a great strike from the outside of Away No 8 Stuart McCaw’s right foot found the back of the net and made it (1-2).

The Away side nearly made it 1-3 when Away No 2 and captain Calum Jackson’s long range effort which was fizzing towards goal was bravely blocked and headed away by Gavin Gray for a corner.

The Away side couldn’t break down the Home team’s defence to get through on goal, and it looked like it would take something special to break down the resolute Home team’s defence.

And that’s just what it took! Another great strike in the 36th min, this time from the impressive No 4 Andrew Alexander, saw his 25 yard bullet find the bottom left hand corner of the goal (1-3).

The Away team were buoyed by their 2 goal lead and just before half-time they won a free-kick near the edge of the penalty area. Captain Calum Jackson stepped up and struck a beautiful free-kick through the wall and into the net to take his Away side into half-time in a commanding position (1-4).

That brought the 1st half to an end, it had been a strong defensive performance from the Home side, but the Away team led through some great individual moments. Despite the Away team’s lead it was still all to play for in the 2nd half.

Half Time: Hearts (Home) 1 - 4 Hearts (Away)

The Away team restarted the 2nd half looking to build on their lead whilst the Home team fought to get a way back into the game.

The Home team were up against it with the Away side pressing hard to increase their lead, however they were putting up a great performance to limit the scoring chances of the team in White.

Thanks to the resilience of the Home team it was proving to be a very tight half, with neither team fully able to gain control of possession or the game itself. However as the pressure mounted Home No 1 Declan Doyle was forced into making a fantastic low diving save from Away No 5 Barry McNeill’s low shot from distance.

The Home team had defended bravely in the 2nd half but the Away team finally found a breakthrough in the 85th min, when some quick interplay was finished off by Away No 14 Stewart Auld, the midfielder cleverly dinking the ball over the keeper when the chance presented itself (1-5).

The Home team weren’t totally out of the game though and they grabbed a consolation goal in the 87th min. Home No 11 and captain Kevin Wright scoring with a fantastic finish from 18 yards out and celebrating in style. It was a deserved reward for the Home side, who had defended admirably during the game, to a man (2-5).

And that was the last action of a close fought game. A valiant defensive performance from the Home side wasn’t enough. The impressive Away side were stronger attacking wise and made their chances count to win 2-5.

A huge thank you to all the players and spectators who joined us at Tynecastle in living the dream. Also thanks to Heart of Midlothian FC for their continued excellent support of Football Aid and for allowing us to use the magnificent Tynecastle Stadium.
