Chesterfield 2016

Friday 20th May went down as a historic date in the Football Aid history books for Spireites fans, as we hosted our first ever game at Chesterfield FC’s Proact Stadium. An action packed game resulted in the Away side winning 2-9 on the evening against a strong Home side.

Date: Friday 20th May
Venue: Proact Stadium
Chesterfield (Home) vs Chesterfield (Away)
Kick Off: 19:00 pm
Match Officials: Sam Clayton, Dean Young, Adam Butler & Steve Clayton

The Home team kicked off the 1st ever game at the Pro-act Stadium in Chesterfield’s traditional all Blue kit.

The 1st chance of the game fell to Away No 2 Ben Leeson, whose shot from just outside the box was expertly tipped over the bar by Home No 1 Nick Enright.

In the early stages it was the Away side who looked more likely to score the opener and Away No 8 Hayden Walters darted into the box on the right hand side but saw his low effort fly past the far post.

Penalty! Away No 8 Hayden Walters was brought down late by Home No 2 Leigh Passmore right on the penalty spot. Hayden Walters stepped up himself and confidently drove the ball low to the right hand corner to open the scoring in the 12th min (0-1). (Watch a video clip of the penalty here)

The Home team nearly equalised immediately, a great through ball by No 10 Dean Thorpe found No 7 Martyn Barnett who cut inside his defender well but he couldn’t get his shot on target.

Big chance for Away side to double their lead, a brilliant cross from Away No 7 Paul Flannigan found Away No 11 Kevin Streatfield, whose header couldn’t find the back of the net.

The Away team soon made it 0-2 though when their No 8 Hayden Walters got his 2nd of the game after he broke clear of the offside trap and finished well in the 27th min (0-2).

The Away team nearly gifted the Home side a way back into the game. Home No 2 Leigh Passmore with another brilliantly executed corner found No 7 Martyn Barnett who had a free header that just flew past the goal.

Then Home No 1 Nick Enright pulled off a fantastic back tracking save! Tipping the ball over the bar whilst running backwards to deny Away Captain Michael Georgiou-Holden’s deep cross.

The Home side hit back and got themselves back into the game in the 35th min, a goalmouth scramble in the box saw Home No 11 Terry Rickeard poke the ball home (1-2). The Football Aid regular showed his clinical finishing skills to notch another goal to his growing collection!

However, almost immediately afterwards, the Away side restored their 2 goal lead, a quick run from No 7 Paul Flannigan found No 11 Kevin Streatfield in the 6 yard box and the striker fired the ball home (1-3).

There was just time before the break for the Away team to get a 4th, No 2 Ben Leeson driving a low shot into the net to make it (1-4).

That was it, the 1st half was full of action, with the Away team enjoying more luck in front of goal, but the Home side weren’t out of the game just yet an were hoping for a big 2nd half performance.

Half Time: Chesterfield (Home) 1 - 4 Chesterfield (Away)

Both teams were out swiftly for the 2nd half; and the Away team in all red restarted the game looking confident and it didn’t take them long to increase their advantage.

50 mins on the clock and Away No 8 Hayden Walters weaved through the Home defence to get his hat-trick goal and the Away team’s 5th of the evening (1-5).

Some more great teamwork from the Away side saw No 7 Paul Flannigan power a vicious strike towards Home No 1 Nick Enright and the experience stopper pulled off a fantastic reflex save!

The game continued to rage from end to end and with 73 mins on the clock we witnessed the Away team’s 6th of the night after brilliant build up play from No 7 Paul Flannigan forced a sharp save from Nick Enright, however No 9 Michael Georgiou-Holden pounced on the rebound to score his 2nd of the night (1-6).

The Home side kept threatening though and a strong run from Home No 7 Martyn Barnett saw him one-on-one with Away keeper Allan Todd, however the No 51 pulled off a great reflex save from close range to keep the strike out.

The Home team’s persistence eventually paid off though. Deadly striker Terry Rickeard made it 2-6 on 70mins when he struck a fierce shot from outside the box past his opponent and friend Allan Todd. The celebration that followed was great as Terry and Allan posed for a joyful selfie on the pitch! (2-6)

However the Home team’s joy was short lived and Ben Leeson got his 2nd of the night and his team’s 7th in the 81st min. The No 2 scoring with a low angled drive to write off any chance of a Home team comeback (2-7).

Straight from the kick off the Away team didn’t let up their attacking intent and a quick break from Away No 14 Mark Watson saw him cheekily back-heel the ball to Away No 11 Kevin Streatfield who scored with a classy finish making it (2-8).

There was just time for one more goal for the Away side right before the final whistle as Away No 11 Kevin Streatfield popped up free in the box to head home his 3rd of the night (2-9).

That was the last significant action of the game. Our 1st ever game at Chesterfield FC’s Proact Stadium was action-packed throughout and saw the Away team claim a deserved 2-9 victory! We’d like to thank all the players and spectators involved in our Chesterfield event for making it such a great success. Also huge thank you to Chesterfield FC for allowing us the use of the superb Proact Stadium and for the great hospitality we received on the night.
