Norwich City 2016

A warm and sunny Carrow Road was the venue for our next Football Aid game, and it was certainly a real thrill for our players when they learned that Canaries Legends Grant Holt and Adam Drury would be gracing the hallowed turf alongside them! The match itself was a thriller right to the end and finished with the Away team just edging the win 4-5.

Date: Thursday 19th May 2016
Venue: Carrow Road
Norwich (Home) vs Norwich (Away)
Kick Off: 10am
Legends: Grant Holt, Adam Drury
Match Officials: Peter Venables, Lewis Venables & Sam Holman

The Home team wearing the traditional Yellow and Green colours of the Canaries won the toss and elected to allow the Away team to get us underway at Carrow Road.

And the Away team went straight on the attack, No 11 and Captain Stuart Schofield tried his luck from the edge of the box but saw his shot go just the wrong side of the crossbar.

Then Home No 1 Pat Davis was quick off his line to stop Stuart Schofield rounding him and putting the ball in the net.

Despite the early pressure from the team in Green shirts, it was the Home team who struck first when a quick-thinking ball through by Home No 10 Steve Davis found striker Darren Walker in space, the No 11 controlled with his right foot before sneaking a shot in with his left foot after 7 minutes (1-0).

The Home team were buoyed by their goal and it was nearly 2-0 soon after! A looping volley from Home No 8 Russell Jiggens was just too high for the goal, and in this period the Home side were definitely looking stronger in attack.

Home No 1 Pat Davis was determined to keep a clean sheet, and when Away No 9 Simon Baillie raced through the defence and was one-on-one with the keeper, the impressive stopper dived low and made a great double save.

It was all about the keepers at Carrow Road, this time Away No 1 Adam Joyce pulled off a flying acrobatic save from Home No 9 Jaime Welsh. From the resulting corner Home No 4 Riccardo Ruffo nearly scored a header when he found himself free in the box.

The Home team were defending steadfastly and there was a moment of brilliant teamwork when Home No 1 Pat Davis stopped an oncoming shot & player, the ball was rolling towards the goal before Home Legend Grant Holt used a terrific back-heel on the line to stop the ball going in.

Away Legend Adam Drury was determined not to be outshone by his counterpart, and an excellent last man sliding challenge prevented the Home side making it 2-0.

However the Home side did extend their lead soon after, making it 2-0 after a few half chances had been cleared, the ball found Home No 6 Gary Brazier on the edge of the area and he volleyed home 1st time to score a stunning strike in the 21st min (2-0).

However the battling Away side found themselves back in the game on 27mins, when a good close range save from Home GK Pat Davis fell back into the path of Captain Stuart Schofield, the deadly striker made no mistake, firing home the rebound to make the score (2-1).

Away No 11 Stuart Schofield had found his shooting boots and he scored his 2nd of the game and the Away team’s equaliser in the 36th min with a powerful strike from just outside the box, game on (2-2)!

The score stayed level as the half time whistle went; and when the break came an action packed 1st half full of goals, saves and skills from both sides ended all even!

Half Time: Norwich City (Home) 2 - 2 Norwich City (Away)

Legends Grant Holt and Adan Drury used all their experience at half-time to try to inspire their teams to kick on for a victory and the players strode back onto the pitch full of purpose and determined to do themselves justice in the 2nd half.

The Home team restarted the game and it wasn’t long before we saw the ball in the net again, unfortunately for the Home team the goal came at their end! A low cross by the impressive Away No 11 Stuart Schofield was driven into the danger area and Home Legend Grant Holt could do nothing to prevent the ball coming off him and ending up in his own goal….(2-3) to the Away team in the 50th min.

Not deterred by that unfortunate set-back the Home team showed great character and were next on the score sheet. A delightful lobbed effort from skilful Home No 10 Steve Davis bringing the scores all level again on 69mins (3-3).

Penalty on 81mins! Away No 23 Adam Joyce was judged to handle the ball in the area and Home No 9 Jamie Welsh coolly stepped up and slotted the ball into the right hand side of the goal to give the Home side the lead again with time running out (4-3).

However a late comeback still looked on the cards for the Away side when No 11 Stuart Schofield rounded off a fantastic day to score his hat trick in the 85th min. The speedy striker firing his shot into the roof of the net to make the scores all even with only minutes to play (4-4).

But there was even more late drama to come, with the Away side scoring right at the death! The honours went to Away No 9 Simon Baillie, who scored with a close range effort from the 6 yard box after No 10 Stuart Macnab-Grieve’s low driven cross found him in space (4-5).

There was barely time for the Home team to restart the game and the Away team’s 5th goal was the last real action of the game, the team in Green shirts grabbing the victory in an extremely tight, goal filled battle. Both teams showed great attacking play and scored some excellent goals and should be rightly proud of their efforts.

Massive thank you to all the players and spectators who helped create and Live the Dream. Also a huge thanks to Norwich City for the use of the fantastic facilities at Carrow Road and also to Legends Grant Holt & Adam Drury for lending their support and adding so much to the experience for their fellow players.
