Leicester City 2015

After the club’s fantastic end to the season the Foxes fans were in great spirits for our 2015 game at the King Power and the atmosphere under the floodlights was that bit extra special as well. The game itself was a real thriller with the close nature of the game meaning the result was still in the balance until the final stages of the game, the Home team ran out comfortable winners in the end 4-0, however both sets of players could be hugely proud of their efforts.

Date: Thursday 28th May 2015
Venue: The King Power
Leicester City (Home) vs Leicester City (Away)
Kick Off: 19:30 pm
Match Officials: Martin Dexter, John Carr, Kevin Wesson & Simon Fradley

The Leicester City Home team kicked the game off playing from left to right and defying the gloomy overhead conditions started the game brightly. No 9 Dave Taylor and linked up well with his strike partner Hemel Majithia to set him up for an opportunity on the edge of the area, however the No 11’s shot was always rising and cleared the crossbar without bothering Away keeper Michael Hextall.

The Away team, wearing the Gold change shirts, tried to get their passing game working but the Home team continued to press and when Dave Taylor crossed the ball into the area after a corner on the right Luca Sangiorgi found himself alone at the back post, he fired a low effort at goal which was saved brilliantly by Michael Hextall. The ball rebounded to Hemel Majithia and Hextall completed a fantastic double save from point blank range. The ball fell to Captain Jon Dixon on the edge of the area, however the big No 10 couldn’t keep his shot down and it flew over the bar. What a let off for the Away team!

At the other end the Away team almost scored after a long ball down the middle allowed Marcus Plant to race beyond the Home defence, however goalkeeper Nick Enright was out of his goal quickly to close down the danger and clear with his feet. The Home team responded and clever pass from Jon Dixon found Hemel Majithia in space on the left side of the box, however the striker couldn’t get enough on his shot and Hextall saved comfortably.

Play raged from end to end and both No 15s, Cristian Gomez and Dean Smith showed they had more to them than just defensive skills when they went on a pair of dangerous looking mazy runs, however on both occasions they were shut down by the opposition’s defence and the move came to nothing.

Home No 9 Dave Taylor was starting to become more influential in the game and he created a decent chance with a cross to the back post for Hemel Majithia, however the No 11 couldn’t keep his header down and it flew over the crossbar. The pressure told eventually and the Home team took the lead on 30mins. Jon Dixon was the creator with a clever reverse ball that found Dave Taylor in space on the edge of the area, the No 9 steered a low shot towards goal, and after a slight deflection wrong footed the keeper, the ball nestled into the left side of the net (1-0).

The goal scorer turned provider mins later when he chipped a great ball into the area for strike partner Majithia, however the No 11’s powerful header was straight at the keeper and Hextall beat the ball away. The team in Gold came roaring back and a clever through ball from Craig Mellon found No 2 Riccardo Ruffo racing beyond the Home defence, however the flying fullback was denied by a great save from Home goalkeeper Nick Enright.

The Away team were coming into the game more and they created a couple of headed chance for Rickeard and Ruffo, however neither player could get their effort on target. Back came the Home team and a quick throw-in from Gogs Gogna found Captain Jon Dixon in space 25 yards from goal, the No 10 fired in a fantastic effort but it was just too high and it flew narrowly over the crossbar.

That was the last real chance of the 1st half and the Home team went in for a much needed rest with their slender 1-0 advantage intact. Both teams’ goals had led a charmed life at times and the fans were confident of seeing a few more goals in the 2nd period.

Half Time: Leicester (Home) 1 - 0 Leicester (Away)

The Away team were desperate to get back into the game and a mistake from the feet of goalkeeper Nick Enright handed them an opportunity within minutes of the restart, however the keeper did well to get back across goal and palm away Marcus Plant’s attempted chip. The Away team had a golden chance a few minutes later when Terry Rickeard found himself in space on the left side of the penalty box, he looked to shoot but changed his mind and squared the ball to Marcus Plant instead but the No 11 couldn’t react quickly enough and the chance was gone.

The Home team came right back at the Away team and Dave Taylor had a great chance to double his team’s lead when he was played clear on goal by an excellent defence splitting ball by Gogs Gogna, however Away keeper Michael Hextall raced out of his goal to narrow the angle and made a great save with his feet. However the deadly striker wasn’t to be denied and when Taylor received the ball 20 yards from goal after an excellent passing move involving the attacking trio of Dixon, Gogna and Majithia, the deadly No 9 rifled in a low shot that evaded the diving Hextall and found its way into the bottom left corner of the net (2-0).

The Home team were on top now and when the tenacious Gogs Gogna closed down a defender on the edge of the area and raced into the box he did brilliantly to cut the ball back for Hemel Majithia 8 yards from goal, the No 11 fired a shot on goal and was all set to wheel away and celebrate when Michael Hextall stuck out a hand and somehow clawed the ball away for a corner. What a save by the keeper!

Hemel Majithia was wondering what he had to do to score, but thankfully the skillful striker finally got the reward his efforts deserved on 71mins. The Home team’s much travelled defender Mark Feehan started the move by winning the ball in midfield and spraying a great through ball for Dave Taylor to run onto, the striker waited for the support to arrive and when Majithia made a clever run inside the area he slipped the ball to him and Majithia hooked the ball low past the keeper and into the far corner of the net (3-0).

The Home side were in control now and it looked like it would take a something special for the Away side to get back into the game. The team in gold gave it their best effort though and when Roberto Donay was released down the right by an excellent pass from Marcus Plant he played a great ball into the box which Mattia Bertoldi did well to get on the end of, the No 17 powered a header goalwards but Nick Enright made a miraculous point blank save to deny the midfielder and maintain his clean-sheet!

The Home side responded and when Jon Dixon played Hemel Majithia in on the left the striker did brilliantly to waltz past the last defender and race into the penalty area, however with only the keeper to beat his right foot shot drifted narrowly past the far post. Back came the Away team and after Marcus Plant was found by a clever pass from Adrian Landers the striker went on a fantastic run before cutting the ball back to centre half Sam Davis who’d embarked on a lung bursting run to join the attack, the defender hit his shot 1st time but it was too close to the keeper and Nick Enright made another fantastic close range stop.

The Home team weren’t to be denied their win though and their Captain Jon Dixon wrapped up the game in the 82nd min. The big No 10 did well to dis-possess Craig Mellon 35 yards from goal and when the Away defence came out to pressure him he cleverly switched the ball to his left foot and his well hit shot caught out the keeper at his left hand post and nestled into the back of the net (4-0).

The Home Captain was enjoying a fine game and he created another chance for Dave Taylor moments later with a fine through ball, Taylor steadied himself and drilled a well struck shot at goal, however Michael Hextall flung himself to his left and parried the ball away to safety. The Home side weren’t resting on their laurels Gogs Gogna demonstrated his pace when he raced clear of the defence soon afterwards, the left midfielder lined up a shot from 20 yards out and hit it superbly, however to the relief of the Away team the ball flashed inches past the far upright.

The Home team’s Cristian Gomez had been hugely impressive throughout and another fine pass from the No 15 saw Dave Taylor race clear on the right side of the area, unselfish as ever the striker squared the ball to strike partner Majithia and luckily for the Away team the striker couldn’t keep his shot down and the ball flew high over the crossbar.

The Away team were desperate to get on the scoresheet and a clever one-two by Sam Davis allowed him to run at the heart of the Home defence, he spotted his Captain Dean Smith in space on the right and picked him out with a great through ball, however the defender couldn’t keep his curling shot down and it narrowly missed the top of the goal.

It was the final chance of the match and the referee’s whistle brought to an end an enthralling end to end encounter moments later. The Home team ran out convincing winners in the end thanks to the combination of excellent defending at the back and clinical finishing up front, however the Away team could count themselves unlucky they didn’t get more reward for their impressive build up play and on another day the result could well have been different. The watching fans had been thoroughly entertained and they showed their appreciation with a fantastic round of applause for both sets of players as they left the pitch.
