The Riverside pitch was in immaculate condition as the Middlesbrough players took to the hallowed turf. The watching Boro fans were looking forward to enjoying plenty of entertainment and they certainly weren’t disappointed, with the players serving up 13 goals for them to enjoy! The impressive Home team ran out convincing 12-1 winners in the end, with star man Jamie Martin scoring a double hat-trick, however the Away team gave it their all as well and the game turned out to be another hugely enjoyable date in the #FootballAid15 calendar.

Date: Friday 22nd May 2015
Venue: The Riverside Stadium
Middlesbrough (Home) vs Middlesbrough (Away)
Kick Off: 15:30 pm
Match Officials: Dane McCarrick, Tim Craig, Rory Sadler & Geoff Mann

The Home team kicked off the match playing from left to right and wearing the traditional Red shirts and White shorts, while the Away team were sporting the Dark Grey change kit with bright green highlighting.

It was the Home side who started brightly though, pushing forward from the off, and their energetic midfielder Dean Thorpe was unfortunate to see his early effort end up just wide of the right hand upright. Back up the other end Kev Wright broke away from the defence and fired in a shot on goal which was well saved by Brian Hayden, however the offside flag had been raised anyway.

The Home side attacked again and when Baljinder Singh found himself in space on the left side of the area he brilliantly beat one defender before being tripped by centre half David Parry. The midfielder picked himself up and fired a low shot into the left corner of the net to open the scoring after just 8mins (1-0).

The play settled down now and both sides enjoyed their fair share of possession, without creating any clear-cut chances. Home No 9 Simon Murkin came closest with a snap shot from inside the area, however he couldn’t direct his effort on target. However the goal wasn’t long in coming and it was to be the 1st of many for the impressive Home No 11 Jamie Martin! With 21mins on the clock Dean Thorpe won the ball in midfield and played it into Captain Paul Cronin, he then found Martin in space with a clever through ball with the outside of his boot and the striker just nipped in ahead of Away keeper Chad Pearson to collect the ball and poke it into the empty net (2-0).

It didn’t take lon for Home striker Jamie Martin to double his tally. With 30mins gone he outpaced Andrew McShane and ran in on goal, the Away keeper Chad Pearson did brilliantly to dispossess him with a brave save at the feet of the attacker, however Martin reacted 1st and slid the ball home from 2 yards before McShane had time to clear (3-0).

The Away keeper Chad Pearson was being kept busy and he had to be alert to prevent another chance for Martin on the edge of the box shortly afterwards. And it took another smart stop from Pearson at the near post to deny the same man a few mins later! The big keeper was in fine form and soon after he made another great diving save to deny Bal Singh!

The Away team were desperate to get something out of the half themselves and with half time approaching the elegant midfielder Nick Medlicott found Martin McLeod charging up the left wing. The fullback outpaced Bob Thorpe and made room for a shot with his right foot, however Home keeper Brian Hayden was in the perfect position to smother his effort from close range.

Jamie Martin then raced clear and attempt a chipped finish, however the ball floated just wide of the far post. Home No 6 Ian Marron then found himself in space inside the area and just when it looked like he was going to burst the net, Chad Pearson dived to his right and made an incredible one handed save!

The Home team continued to press and No 9 Simon Murkin had a gilt edged chance right on half-time, however after being set free by Martin on the edge of the area, the big striker could only fire his effort over the bar. The referee’s whistle brought the half to an end soon afterwards and the on form Home team went into the break with a commanding 3 goal advantage.

Half Time: Middlesbrough (Home) 3 - 0 Middlesbrough (Away)

The Away team were hoping for an improvement in their fortunes in the 2nd half and they set about trying to reduce their deficit from the off. However it was the Home team who increased their advantage just 2mins after the break. No 14 Robert Hudson showed his strength to win the ball in midfield and played a one-two with Jamie Martin, then he drove into the left side of the area and slotted into the far side of the goal with his left foot (4-0).

There was no letting up from the Home team and Jamie Martin bagged his hat-trick on 50mins with an exquisite effort. The No 11 played a quick corner on the left to Robert Hudson and on receiving the return pass he jinked past the Away defender and curled an unstoppable effort in off the underside of the bar and into the top right corner of the goal. It was an unbelievable strike and a definite contender for Goal of the Season (5-0)!

The Home Captain Paul Cronin was next to test Chad Pearson with a great run and strike from the edge of the area, however the Away keeper comfortably beat his effort away. The goal was coming though and it was created by a great piece of link up play in midfield on 57mins. Terry Rickeard collected the ball and played it inside to Dean Thorpe before making a great run beyond the defence, Thorpe’s pin-point pass found Rickeard racing in on goal and the left midfielder unselfishly squared the ball for Jamie Martin, who side footed home from 6 yards for his 4th goal of the game (6-0).

The Home side were relentless in their quest for goals and they racked up their 7th of the game just 2mins later when Martin McLeod floated a dangerous looking corner into the area. Terry Rickeard did brilliantly to outjump the defence and he directed a fantastic header into the net, in off the underside of the bar (7-0).

Just 3mins later and the Home team had racked up their 8th goal. McLeod collected the ball in defence and fed Thorpe on the right. The No 7 then found forward Murkin who in turn found Jamie Martin, the deadly striker then raced past the last defender and fired his 5th of the game past Pearson (8-0).

The shell-shocked Away team hit back immediately and almost got the goal their efforts deserved. David Baines attacked down the left and squared for Kev Wright, the Away Captain met the ball brilliantly and his powerful effort looked destined for the net, however his shot was just too high and the ball crashed off the bar and away to safety!

However the Reds came right back at the team in dark grey and Terry Rickeard bagged his 2nd of the game on 68mins. Robert Hudson created the goal with a skilful run down the right and a clever cut-back towards Martin, however this time the deadly striker dummied the ball and it fell to Rickeard 10 yards out, the midfielder took a bit of time to compose himself then despatched the ball into the left side of the goal with his right foot (9-0).

The Home team were keen to maintain their clean-sheet and the headed combination of Rickeard and Marron cleared away a dangerous looking corner soon afterwards. Then a few mins later Brian Hayden pulled off a fantastic diving save to deny David Baines. However the ruthless Home team weren’t resting on their laurels and they increased their lead on 71mins. This time goal machine Martin turned provider, racing on to a through ball and squaring for Simon Murkin, and the No 9 made no mistake from 8 yards out (10-0).

Just 2mins later and it was 11! Robert Hudson played a clever one-two with Jamie Martin before racing in on goal and executing a perfect dinked finish into the far corner of the goal (11-0).

With 79mins on the clock the Away team finally got a reward for all their efforts. No 9 Colin Thompson picked the ball up on the right wing and played a deep cross to the far post area, Kev Wright collected the ball and cut it back into the path of Lee Simmonds and the No 7 made no mistake from a couple of yards out (11-1). The right mid then performed a less than perfect front somersault, and his earth shattering celebration got the biggest cheer of the day!

There was just time for Jamie Martin to cap a sublime personal performance by scoring his 6th goal of the game in the 89th min! The classy striker was played in on goal by his captain Paul Cronin and he rounded the keeper with ease before dummying a shot and flicking the ball nonchalantly into the empty net (12-1).

That goal completed the scoring and the referee’s whistle brought the encounter to an end seconds later and the impressive Home team ran out convincing winners by 13-1. Their classy No 11 Jamie Martin was immense throughout and his double hat-trick would certainly go down as a contender for performance of the season! The Away team fought hard throughout and their impressive keeper Chad Pearson was unlucky to be on the end of such a large defeat, however the game was played in such a great spirit that every one of the players looked as though they’d thoroughly enjoyed the occasion, regardless of the final score.
