QPR Game 1 2015

The conditions were perfect for our 1st game of the day at Loftus Road, and the watching QPR fans were treated to a very high standard game with plenty of chances at both ends. A combination of clinical finishing and resolute defending allowed the Away team to edge the game 1-4, however the Home team pressured them right to the end and if a few 50-50 moments in the game had gone their way we could have been looking at a different result.

QPR (Home) vs QPR (Away)
Game 1

The sun was shining and the Loftus Road pitch was in great condition as the QPR Home team kicked off Game 1, playing from left to right. The early action was confined to the central areas, and the even nature of the early stages of the contest seemed to indicate it was going to be a close encounter, with chances at a premium.

The Home and Away No 4’s Ross Manister and Noel Burke were stamping their authority on the game and a combination of their diligent positional play and forceful tackling was keeping things tight at the back. However the stalemate was broken by the Away team on 15mins. A long kick-out from GK David White was headed on by midfielder Charlie Bell and No 9 Israel Amponsah searing pace to race clear of the defence before squaring the ball to his strike partner Matt Wilcox who made no mistake from inside the area (0-1).

The Home team reacted well and when Mathew Duffy found No 7 David Baker on the edge of the area he looked to have a good opportunity, however his shot was charged down by club coach Pat Ryan, who was playing at Left Back. Goalkeeper David White collected the ball and his howitzer of a clearance from hand deceived the Home defence and allowed Israel Amponsah to run clear on the left side of the area, the striker controlled the ball and fired an unstoppable shot past the despairing Home keeper Daniel Churchman and into the nearside top corner of the net (0-2). With just 23mins gone the Away side were well on top.

Minutes later Amponsah was felled on the edge of the area and Francesco Oddone stepped up and curled a ‘Pirlo’ like effort goalwards, however Home keeper Daniel Churchman did well to tip the ball over the bar. Matt Wilcox tested the big keeper soon after with a rasping shot from distance, however the stopper was up to the task again and expertly flung himself to his left to tip the ball round the post for a corner.

At the other end Home No 10 Kyle Staunton worked himself an opportunity from 25 yards out, however his powerful effort flew just past the right hand upright. The lively Home No 8 Mark Edmonds was causing problems at the Away end with his ability to take on a man, however his team still couldn’t find a way past the team in Red and Black’s defence.

At the other end Away No 11 Matt Wilcox raced onto a loose ball at the back and powered his way into the box, the covering Harry Coxon looked like he had just nicked the ball before he made contact with Wilcox, however the referee pointed to the spot and Wilcox dusted himself down and side footed the ball into the bottom left corner (0-3). With just over 5mins until half-time the Away team were in a commanding position.

Both sides continued to push for an opening, and Amponsah was very unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when he appeared to be tripped by Manister, however defences remained on top going into half-time and the referee’s whistle brought the opening 45mins to an end with the score remaining 0-3 to the Away side.

Half Time: QPR (Home) 0 - 3 QPR (Away)

The Away side kicked off the 2nd half determined to maintain their advantage, however it was the Home side who applied some early pressure, forcing a corner when Harry Coxon’s shot was deflected wide. However nothing came of it and the Away defence held on to their clean-sheet.

The Home team continued to press and when their No 14 Harry Coxon let fly from 25 yards it looked like they were going to get on the scoresheet, however GK David White did well to parry the effort away for a corner. Back came the Away side and Israel Amponsah showed his skills to control a long ball in the area and fashion an opportunity for himself, however his volleyed effort was too high.

With 55mins on the clock the Away side delivered the killer blow to the Home team’s chances, No 7 Giulio Alberti played a through ball to Israel Amponsah but Home keeper Daniel Churchman raced out to clear the danger, however Alberti reacted brilliantly and when the ball fell to him he hit a fantastic 1st time effort from 30 yards which flew past Churchman and into the unguarded net (0-4). It was obviously a special moment for the winger as he celebrated in style, with a thumb in his mouth and a pretend baby up his shirt!

The Home team responded well and when Staunton and Baker combined to create an opportunity for Duffy inside the area, the No 9 was unfortunate that his effort went just wide of the left hand post. Harry Coxon was next to try his luck from distance, however his well struck shot was saved well by GK White and the ball went for a corner. From the resulting corner the ball was cleared to that man Harry Coxon again, his fired in a low shot and Home striker Daniel Watson was in the perfect position to divert the ball past the Away keeper from close range (1-4). With 65mins gone the Home team finally had a reward for all their efforts!

Sensing an opportunity to get back in the game, the Home team continued to press forward, however the Away defence stood firm. Two chances came in quick succession, however a shot from Home No 9 Mathew Duffy was saved by GK White, then an effort from David Baker was blocked for a corner. Then Mark Edmonds went on a slaloming run from midfield, the winger went past 2 players and raced into the area before letting fly with his left foot, however his goal-bound effort was brilliantly blocked by Noel Burke and the danger was cleared.

A cross from Edmonds created a great chance for Kyle Staunton moments later, however the No 10 couldn’t quite get enough on the header and it flashed past the far post. With the Away defence creaking Staunton broke into the box immediately afterwards and worked his way free on the right edge of the 6 yard box, however he was caught in two minds and his shot ended up more of a cross and the ball ended up running parallel to the goal and past the far post.

Despite their tireless efforts the Home team couldn’t break down the Away team’s resolute defence and when the referee’s whistle brought proceedings to an end the game finished in a win for the Away team by 4 goals to 1. Both teams had brought an enormous amount to the occasion and they deservedly received a standing ovation when they left the Loftus Road pitch.
