Derby della Lanterna G2 2014

Our 2nd Football Aid Italia Derby della Lanterna, was the 4th and final game of the weekend at Genoa's Stadio Luigi Ferraris. The format of the game was Sampdoria (Home) vs Genoa (Away) and the match itself was a derby day to remember for the Away side, with the Grifone eventually ending up 3-12 winners, despite the 1st half being fairly even! The sides featured fantastic playing legends in Attilio Lombardo and Marco Lanna for Sampdoria and Marco Nappi for Genoa and the eagerly contested and hard fought match certainly demonstrated the passion that both sets of players felt for their respective clubs.

Date: Sunday 25th May 2014
Venue: Stadio Luigi Ferarris
Sampdoria (Home) vs Genoa (Away)
Kick off: 15:30 pm
DDL Game 2
Legends: Attilio Lombardo (Sampdoria) and Marco Nappi (Genoa)
Managers: Marco Lanna (Sampdoria) and Roberto Murgita (Genoa)

The proud Sampdoria and Genoa teams marched out onto the pitch in perfect conditions and belted out their respective club anthems with the kind of passion that was to become evident in the match soon after!

It was a cagey start to the game, with not much in the way of chances early on, however on 18 mins the deadlock was broken when big Davide Guastavino coolly slotted home a well taken penalty to put the Grifoni in front (0-1).

And the Genoa team doubled their lead on 35 mins, this time it was No 11 Alessandro Dell'Orto with a clinical left foot finish, giving Fabio Paraboschi no chance in the Sampdoria goal (0-2).

Then as the half time break approached, Genoa Legend Marco Nappi showed his class to extend his team's lead to 3 goals on 40 mins (0-3).

Shortly afterwards the referee blew his whistle for half time and the players got the opportunity for a well deserved rest. The Sampdoria side hoped that their 2nd half subs could turn things around, while the Genoa side were delighted with the 1st 45 mins and hoped for more of the same in the 2nd period.

Half Time: Sampdoria (Home) 0 - 3 Genoa (Away)

It was the Genoa side who came out firing, wasting no time they went even further ahead on 47 mins. Legend Marco Nappi showing off his skills again to score his 2nd of the game (0-4).

3 mins later and the Genoa side were even further ahead, with their No 14 Filippo Gorziglia following up well to increase their lead to 5 (0-5). And things were to get worse soon afterwards as well, when Genoa No 17 Andrea Veri punished a lapse in the Samp defence after 53mins (0-6).

With tensions rising on both sides and the derby atmosphere heating up, the Sampdoria side eventually got the goal their efforts deserved when their Man of the Match striker Roberto Donay's excellent header went in off the post and into the net beyond goalkeeper Mauro Iguera (1-6).

However the Genoa side showed no signs of letting up and with the Sampdoria defence in disarray they went further ahead on 63 mins after a fantastic chip from 25 yards from Legend Marco Nappi allowed him to bag his hat trick (1-7). Then with 70 mins on the clock No 14 Filippo Gorziglia finished a cutback by Alessandro Dell'Orto to make the score (1-8).

The Genoa side weren't finshed yet and seconds later they got their 9th goal, No 4 Pietro Maresca tapping into the net after good work by Emanuele Bozano (1-9). However the Sampdoria team were still fighting hard and their Legend Attilio Lombardo scored with a great strike from 20 yards to reduce the deficit again on 80 mins (2-9).

However more misery was to come for the Home side; and a clinical strike from No 14 Filippo Gorziglia (2-10), a great header from No 17 Emanuele Bozano (2-11) and a final goal from Capitano Alessandro Menghi (2-12) put the game well beyond the Blucerchiati.

The Sampdoria side still wanted to give their fans something to cheer about though and in the 90th min Sampdoria No 16 Paolo Panico finished well to gain some sort of consolation for the Blucerchiati (3-12).

That was to be the final goal of the game and an incredible, passionate match ended 3-12 to Genoa, it was a Derby win that will be talked about for years!
