Charlton Athletic 2009

Sixteen days after the final Championship game, 24 Charlton fans donned on their red and white shirts respectively, and lined up in the tunnel ready to grace the hallowed turf of The Valley. Although the first team’s recent relegation battle had seen them dropped down to League One, the Addicks fans were in high spirits, all in the knowledge that today, Charlton could not lose.

Wednesday 20th May 2009
The Valley
Charlton Athletic Home Vs Charlton Athletic Away
K.O: 3.15pm
Legends: Brian Kinsey, Theo Foley, Steve Gritt, Peter Garland, Mike Flanagan, Eddie Youds and Paul Gorman
Match Officials: Gordon Manning, Peter Cruise and James Keane

The players emerged from the tunnel to applause from their friends and family sitting in the stands, with the vocal support seeming to get the adrenaline going from the very first minute. Both teams were eager to get off to a flying start, but it was the Away side that grabbed the early lead in only the second minute. Roberto Fortuna intercepted a pass on the left of midfield and crossed into the box for Garry Philpot, who laid it off for Dave Wheatley to hit a right-footed strike from just outside the area into the bottom right corner.

The Home side almost drew level in the 18th minute when Hadley Silver ran down the left wing before coming inside and playing a one-two with Steve Gritt. The Charlton legend received the ball back outside the area and hit a terrific left-footed shot that went over the keeper and came crashing back off the bar. The Home team were very much in the ascendancy now, and only a great performance by Away keeper, Rich Duffy, was keeping them from scoring.

In the 21st minute however the scores were finally level; Hadley Silver crossed in from the left, but the ball was half cleared by Captain Ban Baird, however he managed to prod the ball back for Chris Myatt to knock it in for the equaliser. The joy was short-lived for the Home team as almost straight from the re-start they fell behind again. Midfielder Roberto Fortuna received the ball on the right then cut inside on a mazy dribble running away from the defenders and into the box, before striking a low left foot finish into he bottom left corner.

In the 33rd minute, goalscorer Roberto Fortuna passed the ball to defender Chris Tremayne who was around 30 yards from goal. He hit a terrific first time shot with venom that was brilliantly tipped over the post by Home keeper, Gareth Allen. Moments later and the game was level after the Home side were awarded a free-kick on the right corner of the box. The ball was then curled in left-footed towards the near post, with Chris Myatt once again getting away from his marker to head home the equaliser.

With 36 minutes played, the Away team were awarded a penalty – with midfielder Tony Hine stepped up and hit a shot to the left of the keeper that was saved by Gareth Allen. With less than a minute remaining the Home team broke down the left of midfield and Andrew Taylor was fed the ball inside the box. His shot just missed the post but Rich Duffy parried the ball. That was to prove a vital save when the Away side went straight down the other end of the pitch and scored; the ball was pinging around inside the box but Dave Wheatley managed to get control and fire his second through a host of players into the bottom right of the net.

Half Time: Charlton Athletic Home 2 – 3 Charlton Athletic Away

The Home side came out all guns blazing at the beginning of the second half, applying sustained pressure to the Away goal through a series of corners and long-range efforts. In the 58th minute they had a great chance to get back on level terms; a free-kick was floated into the box by Ben Baird and found Andrew Taylor unmarked behind the defence. However his control let him down and the keeper jumped on the ball.

In the 62nd minute there was complete mayhem in the Away penalty area. Terry Godfrey crossed the ball in from the right, however Rich Duffy was able to palm the ball away, Andrew Taylor picked up the rebound and hit a right-footed effort that Duffy brilliantly blocked. David Fennessy then latched onto the rebound however saw his shot saved by Duffy’s legs. And finally the ball fell to Chris Myatt but just as he was about to score, Tony Slater came in with a saving tackle to clear the ball.

The Home team were creating plenty of chances but just couldn’t find a way past a determined defence and an inspired Rich Duffy. In the 71st minute, a free-kick was given to the Away team inside the Home half of the pitch. The ball was flicked over the defence by Roberto Fortuna and Garry Philpot volleyed it past the keeper with his right foot to make it 2-4.

With time running out, the Home team laid siege to the Away goal. In the 74th minute, Terry Godfrey sprinted down the left wing and ran past a challenge with ease, cutting back inside and getting the ball goal side of the defence. But once again the shot was palmed away by Rich Duffy. In a last ditched attempt in the 86th minute, Terry Godfrey came close again to scoring, as he received the ball in a central position, and turned away from his marker onto his weaker left foot curling a shot that skimmed the crossbar in a very unlucky effort.
