Everton Game 1 2008

On a Sunny afternoon in Liverpool's North Side, twenty-seven men proudly stood where Joleon Lescott and Ayegbeni Yakubu had stood only four days previously. Both teams knew there was a lot to live up to, with their heroes having recently secured the prestigious fifth place in one of the most exciting Premier League seasons.

Thursday 15th May 2008
Everton Home vs Everton Away
Game 1
Goodison Park
KO: 13:30 pm
Referee: Alan Butler

An enthusiastic crowd had gathered in the Park End, with the chants beginning during the photoshoot! Both teams were clearly aiming for that first vital goal, but it wasn't long until the Away Team stormed into the attack. It was Adam Chambers who was first to quickly put his name on the scoreboard with a well taken goal. The striker made sure he got into plenty of space by dropping off his marker, zigzagging around Kevin Cunningham, and eventually rounding the Home Keeper Sean Bennett, before slotting the ball home to make it one nil to the Away Team.

Although both teams were playing very competitively in what was a very energetic and entertaining first half, it was the Away Team that were able to double their lead fifteen minutes from half time. Goal scorer Adam Chambers once again managed to get into space, just in time to slide the ball low past the keepers left hand side.

The Home Team continued to press on, and in the minute before the half time whistle Richard Edwards revived his sides hopes and brought one back. The midfielder took his time to place the ball high past the Away Keeper Eric Lee, whose despairing effort could not keep the ball out of the net, and the goal scorer entertained the crowd with the most passionate celebration of the game.

Half Time: Home Team 1-2 Away Team

It was obvious by the fiercely competitive start to the game, that Clive Gaulton and Phillip Bennett, the Home and Away Captains respectively, had provided great encouragement during the half time team talk. It was the Home Team though that were first to threaten an equalizer, with a great strike from Phill Bateman, which came crashing back off of the bar.

The Away team quickly made it 3-1 with a goal that the Home keeper will wish to forget, but luckily a few minutes later at the other end Phill Bateman did well to score with an angled left foot shot after his initial shot had been parried by the Away keeper.

Minutes later, not content with scoring one, Bateman battled up the park and through Joe Fay and the Away defence, and slammed the goal past Eric Lee to even up the scores. With the goals being even for the first time in the match, everyone involved realised that the next goal would be the winner.

The afternoon's entertainment continued, with a great save from Home Keeper Sean Bennett. An incredible free kick was taken by midfielder David Marsh, and much to everyone's astonishment, the keeper managed to stretch out and his fingers tipped the ball just over the bar.

Things were starting to hot up and it was the Home Team to go on the attack. A great chance rose for James Bransford to put the Home Team in the lead for the first time, however he just could not manage to follow his shot through, though he was clean on goal. The Away Team immediately took advantage of this, and zig-zagged the ball down the centre of the park to a hungry David Marsh, who this time secured his name on the score sheet with a cool goal from yards outside the net. Although a late goal was devastating to the Home Team, it summed up what had been a fantastic afternoon, and another win for The Toffees.
