CLUB AMBASSADOR

Danny McGrain

Danny McGrain is the Vice Patron of Football Aid as well as Celtic FC Ambassador.

Colossus as Captain of both Club and Country, Danny is a true footballing legend making 657 appearances for Celtic and earning 62 caps for Scotland.

Often described as the best right back of his if not all time, McGrain was diagnosed with insulin dependent diabetes early on in his career and remains an example to others who suffer from the distressing condition, as he continued to play top-level football against all odds. He won 7 League Championship medals, 5 Scottish Cup medals, captained Celtic from the 1970s and played in the ‘74 and’ 82 World Cups, only missing ‘74 through injury.

Danny became Football Aid’s Vice Patron in 2004 and Celtic’s Ambassador in 2006. He explains, "Football Aid brings such joy to fans who have followed their teams over the years, and who can’t quite believe that they are sitting in the same dressing rooms and playing on the same pitch as their heroes. The fact that a proportion of proceeds from these games go to diabetes research is particularly important to me, as one who has learned to live with the condition over many years."
