The Richard House Children’s Hospice (along with the Bobby Moore Fund) is West Ham’s official Club charity, providing respite and terminal care to over 150 of London’s life-limited and life-threatened children and their families every year. To date, Field of Dreams have awarded the Hospice over £14,000 and Karen Duncan, Trust and Statutory Fundraiser, recently got in touch to express her thanks.

“Since 2002, Football Aid and Field of Dreams have very generously donated toward Richard House’s work in providing respite and end of life care to children who are not expected to reach adulthood. We are extremely grateful for their latest contribution of £3,500 to help pay for the valuable service of one of our respite and palliative care nurses.”

In previous years, the funds have helped pay the salary of a Play and Care worker with Jonathan Ashton, Trust Fundraiser, explaining, "By the very nature of their conditions, most children using Richard House need a very great deal of attention and support.  Nearly all have mobility problems, most require special feeding tubes and many need continuous medication or support.”

“Our Play and Care Workers offer parents the chance for respite from the demands of caring and provide stimulation and care in a positive, warm environment for the children.  They make a huge difference to the lives of the children. As an example, Gemma* is six and profoundly disabled, with little voluntary mobility.  Consequently, she has virtually no way to interact with her environment. With the help of her Play and Care Worker, she can use the sound-sensitive laser display to have a direct and visible effect on something in the outside world. For a child who cannot even move, this is truly empowering."

January 2010 Update - The £3,094 club nominated proceeds from the 2009 matches went to Richard House Children’s Hospice, which offers support to families who have children with life-threatening or complex healthcare needs.

“Richard House is extremely grateful for this generous donation which will enable a play and care worker to offer therapeutic play to life threatened children over a 2 month period. Thank you so much."
