Each year, funds raised from the games at the Stadium of Light are awarded through Field of Dreams to the SAFC Foundation. To date, they have received over £12,500 which has been used in a variety of projects.

The SAFC develops and delivers exciting educational and coaching programmes based around football and work with thousands of young people across the North of England. They aspire to a region where all young people can achieve their true potential and aim for all their programmes to be fun, inclusive, of excellent quality and open to all.

One project to have benefited from the Field of Dreams funds is SAFC’s bullying initiative run in partnership with Children’s Welfare in Sunderland. Lesley Spuhler, Director of the SAFC Foundation explained,  "The project hoped to: support schools in implementing anti bullying strategy; educate children; reduce the number of bullying incidents; build confidence and self esteem.  It delivered 6 week courses combining anti bullying and football.  It involved group discussions, work sheets, info in various forms and competitions, followed by football. The project proved so successful, Sunderland City Council wants to take it up full time."

In addition, the ‘Family Learning Through Football’ project received funding for two years. The project encourages hard to reach families into learning; parents to take accreditation; and built confidence and self esteem.  Hundreds of families have been worked with in several courses across County Durham and in Sunderland.  The project has been overwhelmingly successful, winning awards and much PR. The programme attracts new learners, improves confidence and communication and has a low drop out rate.
